We are here today because our ancestors were successful at hunting. Long before supermarkets and firearms, people were harvesting wild animals for food, bone, sinew, fiber and hide. Animals were caught with simple devices made from readily-available materials.
I like to grow some of my own fruit and vegetables, and to catch my own meat and fish. I have found that snares and traps are a very efficient means of obtaining meat. They can hunt for you 24 hours a day. In my book I fully describe the principles and construction of several reliable traps that I have had personal experience with. I stress the importance of understanding the hunting territory and the animals that live in it.
Be aware that trapping may be totally illegal in some areas, and where it is permitted there are likely to be laws relating to how it must be done. So become familiar with your local rules before setting traps.
And please..... be responsible. Check live-hold traps often. At least once a day. Never abandon a set trap. Don't set traps where endangered species or domestic animals may be harmed by them. Be sensitive, humane and thoughtful. It is a crime against creation to kill, harm or waste anything without a very good reason.
The book: 'Harvesting Wild Meat: the Simple Art of Primitive Trapping' is about 104 pages long and includes a lot of black and white diagrams (no photos). It contains information to be used wisely and preserved for future generations. It may give people a greater understanding of how our ancestors lived, and it is likely to make people appreciate the natural world more.
The book is currently available in paperback form, and should soon be available as an e-book at various online bookstores (Kindle and Epub versions). It is also being translated into Spanish.

jackiemac dot co dot nz I am also offering a no-cost PDF download of my earlier book 'Ancient Skills' from this site. This book contains information, and a few simple drawings, related to things like starting fires with a bow drill, making bows and arrows, primitive blacksmithing, primitive pottery and cordage.
I am passionate about primitive technology and I participate in some online forums (as Coote or Kiwicoote).
