Sometimes it is wise to be as quiet as possible when hunting. This video shows subsonic projectiles being shot from a Bergara BA-13 single shot rifle fitted with an A-Tec Optima 60 suppressor. These shots were fired in a gully so there is probably more sound being reflected back at the camera than there would be if I'd shot over open ground.
The cartridges fired in this video were subsonic loads using home-cast lead projectiles. I have found that these bullets do not expand generally, but compared to the .22 rimfire bullets I have used for pest control, they might be considered to be 'pre-expanded'. Bullet placement is important when using bullets like these so that is why I fitted a decent scope on the rifle.
The larger bullets are Lee 358-200-RF and the way I load them the cartridges are too long for a lever-action or a box magazine. However they shoot comparatively well out of this single-shot, break-action rifle. I propel them with ADI AP70N powder.
The smaller bullets are Lee 358-125-RF which don't group quite as consistently well for me compared to the long 200 grainer when shot at subsonic speed. But they are a nice little bullet and have performed relatively well for me from 900 fps up to maybe 1450 fps. I use Lee Alox lube, although I've also had success using a beeswax and oil home-made lube.
I hand load for my .223 and I get very good groups... it is common to have groups of an inch or less at 100 metres (sorry about mixing my units). The 200 grain cast .357 bullets will generally create a group under 1.5 inches at 50 metres which is acceptable for careful shooting at sensible ranges (this translates to a three inch group at 100 metres). And while I've shot the equivalent of three inch groups at 100 metres with the 125 grain projectile, I do get a few flyers from time to time. The 200 grain bullets have been more consistent for me. I use whatever scrap lead I have on hand to make bullets. I will add shotgun shot or wheel weights to the mix if I have them, but I do not go to the trouble or expense of buying special alloy for bullet casting. And I do not use gas checks.
