Really helpful quick review!! Thank you! There doesn't seem to be an overwhelming amount of info comparing these two. I'd love to see a comparison of the Contax + 80 f/2.0 vs Hasselblad + 100 f/2.2. Currently using a Mamiya AF + 80 f/1.9 system and I really like it, but having autofocus would be amazing for the fast-moving parts of weddings.

+Schon Photography If you want AF capabilities for fast-moving events, you are better off with the Blad. The Contax is fairly slow by design. Kyocera designers wanted to ensure the most precise focus so they went with a different AF process as described below (in addition to the fact that the glass and other elements of their lenses are very heavy): "According to Contax, they have optimized AF precision on three levels. Most AF SLRs on the market use a small number of linear or cross-type AF sensors, usually in a horizontal formation. Each sensor is made up of a few hundred pixels. The Contax 645 is the first AF SLR to use a 1/4 MILLION-pixel CCD for its AF system. The result is a true area sensor (i.e. no gap) with supposedly much higher AF measurement accuracy. Secondly, the AF motor in each lens is optimized for precision with extremely fine movement rather then speed. Lastly, in the case of 220 type films, the vacuum filmback ensures higher film flatness."

Parts and service on the HM16-32 film backs are just as constrained as the Contax. While the H1 body can be serviced - the backs are no longer (by Hasselblad).

The Contax you reviewed is heavy because you left the external battery pack on it. It is significantly lighter without it. And the Contax is an electronic camera and loaded with features driven by electronics which are prone to cold and wet conditions. Contax shooters know how finicky our Connies can be in inclement weather.

I used the camera with and without the battery pack, and while lighter it's still significantly heavier than the Hassi, and on a long wedding day that's makes a big difference. The Contax is also more analog than the Hassi. Yes the Contax has electronic components but they are far more rudimentary in comparison. It's good to know that they are temperamental in certain weather conditions, another strike against the Contax, unfortunately. While I love the Contax I couldn't justify the current cost of the system for professional use, but perhaps for a hobbyist.

That's fair. It sounded that you had not tried the Connie without the external pack. And I wanted to clarify to your viewers that these Contaxes are far from full mechanical cameras and so are prone to reliability issues. If I were in the market today, I would look hard at the Hassy (being a proud owner of a 500C/M) too but I love the ergonomics and control placement of the Contax; then there's that 80/2 T* Planar...

Nice cameras - both! Perhaps the best of them all... But the king of VFM - value for money - will always be the Pentax 645N(II)

one point, with the shutter speeds it is a hard comparison, as the contax is a focal plane shutter, and the hasselblad is a LEAF shutter, so these limits are NOT the cameras doing, it is the fact of design, the LEAF shutter just can't go as fast, as the leaves have to open fully, then close afterwards. ( also I noticed a 'gaff' on your part, turning the hasselblad, these are 6x6 SQUARE film cameras!!)- the 645 is ONLY the digital sensors, and for the xcd cameras, as the ONLY 6x6 digital sensor in existance, to my knowledge is the Rollieflex (leaf/sinar) HY-6 ! as they were the only makers to break the tech barrier into this form factor.

Will H1 work with new Hassleblad lenses ?

Yes, you can use the same lenses for H6 so well like at this H1. All lenses are made by Fuji.

One note that may not make a real difference but may be of consideration is that fuji produces the glass and components for this H1. Fuji is a great company and there craftsman ship is very proven but just something to note. Nice review!

Hasselblad has nothing to do with that camera except for the moniker... it's really made by Fuji for the American market. If indeed it were a Hasselblad, it too would have Carl Zeiss T* optics.

Lytton Martin Yes, you are correct, this is a Fuji made camera with the Hassalblad badge. The glass for this camera is as good as, if not better than the Carl Zeiss Glass. I've shot with both and I saw no significant difference between the Contax Zeiss glass and the Fuji glass. I actually Liked the Fuji glass a bit better, but the option to open up to F/2 on the Contax is really nice.

+Mike Owen You always have the 100mm f2.2 Also you can use the older Zeiss lenses from the V series with an adapter :) Thanks for the review by the way

Lytton Martin Late response here. But the V, H and new compact medium format X1D is all hand built in Sweden. It was the Sony rebranded cameras that was not real Hasselblad. But the H are except from a few parts that are made by Fuji and Minolta. But still put together in Göteborg, Sweden and serviced there.

Mike Owen "i's really made by Fuji for the American market" Ignorance is a bliss, It is true that the lenses are manufactured by Fuji, but Carl Zeiss is a different company, so using that logic the V is not Hasselblad either. If we want to be rational , the H lenses are more hasselblad than the old ones (Hasselblad design them). In general, you are talking from ignorance, and the worse part is that you do without hesitation, disseminating the virus. Even the Wikipeida has the proper information so is pure desire to remain like ignorant.

I stand corrected on the body, however, the prism, back, lenses, inserts, and everything else in the system are made by Fujifilm Japan. The V (for Victor) system was made for over 50 years in Sweden with its lenses manufactured by Carl Zeiss AG of Germany; a match made in heaven. To me, the Zeiss lenses were the HEART & SOUL of the system. The body is just that, a body, granted a very beautiful and boxy body, but a vessel for the soul nonetheless. Don't get me wrong, I shoot Fujifilm's X system and I LOVE it, but the Fujinon Super EBC lenses are still no match for the Carl Zeiss design philosophy and T* lens coatings. Most of the CONTAX 645 lenses are also a full half-stop faster than any of the Fuji GX645AF/ Hasselblad H1 lenses on offer.
