I really appreciate so much about what you've said here. You're so right --- there are times when we want to read for joy, for entertainment. I think that the news does affect all of us negatively lately, no matter what "side" we are on. So yes, we should be so careful to guard our emotions and know what we can handle. Much love to you, friend!

@@MyGrannyEra hello Sarah, the news is pervasive, and even when you’re not watching anything, it can blindside you. Waiting at the supermarket line, to people arguing about the election and getting very personal. My son-in-law is so embroiled in his opinions, he interrogates the whole family on what side they are on. I just tell him I won’t discuss my personal life with him because he is too emotional. I am reading things that might be trite to some readers,, but make me happy. sending much love your way aloha friend

You're so right about short books that don't "read short." They can get pretty intense. I do watch a lot of news and we talk politics at home. Although the news cycle does give me anxiety, I think I actually read more when things are nuts in the world. I guess I'm hiding out in the pages.

November will be 2 years since I stopped watching TV! Surprisingly, I have not missed it. Political views and opinions were creeping into my weekly dramas and into the news. To me, politics is just an excuse to argue about things. Also, about 3 years ago, I started reading fantasy. I've read SF since I was about 10, but not fantasy. This has worked well for me. Reading is my entertainment and escape from reality. You do and read what is right for YOU, not because of anybody else. Glad you got some more subscribers!! Enjoy your reads!!

Hello ba. Thanks for listening to my rambling. When I was a child, I was addicted to fairytales. I went straight for the fairytale section in the library. One day, I will probably dip my toes into fantasy because I know that it was a genre I used to love. I’m glad that you’re enjoying your new genre. I’m tipping my toes into Science Fiction since joining the community. And so far I’m enjoying what I’m reading. I haven’t given up television 100% but I definitely don’t watch the news or anything during the day. I still like my dancing shows and I will sit with my daughter when she watches her cooking shows. But you are absolutely right about people wanting to argue about politics, especially at the moment. Everyone wants to be right. And that’s just going to turn out wrong. I appreciate your watching and I appreciate you. Aloha friend.

Super video. I've also been finding many shorties to be quite dense, either due to the language or because of their experimental nature. When I add in my vision problems, it's been a slow go. I gave up tv news some time ago. Now if I could only do the same for much of You Tube!! I loved your reference to my fave musical Music Man!! You got me singing the trouble song. Thank you. Love you. Aloha.💕

Hi Barbara. I never expected to sing that song but “the music man” is my favorite musical too. wasn’t Robert Preston just wonderful? He made me cry at the end and I get chills just thinking about it. I have given up TV about 75% but I still watch my dancing and my daughter is cooking shows. I also gave up most social media except for KZitem. It just gets too much and it interferes with reading and making videos. I love you too Barbara and appreciate you . Aloha.

@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH hi Kim, I haven’t completely given up on lolly. It’s just not the right time to read it. my concentration is off because my daughter’s fiancé is arriving on Wednesday and there is so much to get ready for, like fixing stuff around the house. Interesting "goings-on" from the door behind you. But yes, we are bombarded by news whether we want it or not. I found my reading was very spotty when I was going through my cancer treatment. Even now, it's "invasive" - it creeps in at times. I've learned not to expect too much from myself - just go with the flow.

I struggle with time jumps in a novel. My current novel _(Daniel Deronda)_ starts with a scene, then it jumps back, and then jumps back forward. I can handle that - but anything more and I’ll probably DNF a book. Thanks for sharing all that about Don MacLean. I was a big Buddy Holly fan, and by association Ritchie Valens too, though I was born after the fatal plane crash. I really enjoyed hearing what he had to say.

Hi Marilyn. You are not alone in feeling how the real world affects your reading. I feel a bit stressed and anxious about some school-related stuff this weekend and it's derailing my reading. I hope things go well for you! By the way, I just got Lolly Willowes and intended for it to be a quick read for shorty September this weekend. Based on what you described, looks like it won't be a short read as I expected! 😅 I often struggle with localized references (that don't come with much explanation) too. Plus, my anxiety won't help with the reading anyway. 😂 I think we do need the sappy once in a while.. the news tends to focus on miserable things done by miserable people. Happy reading and have a lovely day! 🌼🌸💮🌺

Although I am concerned about what is going on in the world, current events don't really affect what I read. Reading has always been something that takes me away from the real world. It is a refuge to me. You make some great points in this video. You are smart not to continue reading books in genres that you realize don't work for you. Good to give them a try. But not to continue
