My horse was worse than Rita when I got him. Twice her size and a stallion. He was super dominant and aggressive. What I did was that I was consistent in my demands/routine. I would consistently shoo him away whenever he misbehaved or was pushy. I consistently asked him to do stuff like backing up, move his hind legs etc before grooming him or whatever. Always a halter and a spanky stick. Now, I don’t need a halter, I don’t need a spanky stick…he’s adorable! Hang in there with Rita.

As a long time riding coach and barn manager for a riding academy I know how important it is to start training when they are young. A lot of people start their training with tying up exercises. They tie their horses and leave them for a hour or so. That would not be my preference for training because they can spook and fly back. If you start with a halter and lead line, tie them carefully and make sure you have a quick release knot on the lead just in case she will get used to it and learn that time with you means paying attention vs being naughty. It would be good for her to have a coach for a while to get her on the right path. A coach can help you set Rita up for success instead of failure. These problems are not hard to fix but can become more difficult later. There are so many things you can do to help her become a wonderful horse like Dixie. Now is the critical time to let her know that there are boundaries and rules she needs to follow. A little time every second day or as much as you can do is all you need now. She is too young for much else. Just the basics like standing and learning how to behave. Good luck. Hope it helps if you read it. Good luck. Be careful. 🎉

@@trppro7640 not sure how long you have been watching 🤔..an know the" how "Rita became to be living there..since September 2023..she's the 3rd horse there.. I've breed, raised, showed, ride, drove trained horses & people... many experienced equestrians along with myself have given advised for proper safe standards working with a young filly ...granted there's a learning curve when a person is use to older trained mellowed out, cooperative 18 year old geldings and hasn't had any experience with a young filly..which has eluded that because the geldings are easy to handle so should Rita.. As with your experiences an level of horsemanship you can "read" the truth of what Rita was trained an how she was handled before her arrival last September. Which watching her especially when the few times Uriel has been there to help an worked Rita with his experienced horsemanship skills exposes that Rita was trained more than that's shown. An that when Uriel worked Rita she can lounge calmly in a saddle, be laid down with out issues in in a few days.. shows Rita training is advanced beyond just basic halter training an manners for a 2 year old. In the 6 months Rita has been there the skills for working with her should advanced to the awareness that a halter is the number one safety tool to use for a young horse and the person handling..as we were taught in our first months of working with a horse...in the 6 months passing the skills of using a halter in learning to the safety it creates for both horse an handler hasn't been applied for advancement of Lester's skills in handling with a young filly. The use of a halter has been neglected for proper use every time Lester is with Rita to the point that it's becoming pathetic...granted he states horses aren't his number one...the longhorns are. But safety factors around an horse is number one for both the horse an the person handling the horse. Which is how I was taught from my dad & gramps over 5 decades ago..1st basis Movement of a horse since it birth starts with the leverage an Movement of the horses head.. where a horse head moves its body will follow. The use of a halter on a horse gives the person the safety an control of a horse's slightest movements of it's whole body an mindset...an a sidebar LESTER EUGENE MORROW JR..when your reading comments during your relaxing hot soak in your bathtub 🛁 an your reading this one..YOUR grace time of 6 months is over..time to COWBOY UP when you work with the horses. Be it for 1 minute or 49 hour's...Do it correctly as the correct advise has been stated or QUIT. don't touch one horse again..because you keep foolin around an not using the advice about proper safe handling of a horse your probabilities of being hurt are climbing higher...which is given that Jami will be mending an helping you to heal up...from a horse incident because you have continually not used the safety standards of working with a horse. You've ask for advice on the horses an many that have good horsemanship knowledge have done just that. True that the longhorns are your number one an I've watched you grab them by their horns an handle them not in fear but respect..same mindset with horses. Happy Easter Lester and Jami and to all who may celebrate this most Holy of Days. I agree with this lady about Rita and when one considers the way she had been dropped off and tied to your gate it makes me wonder how she may have been treated while those people had her. She may have never known love in the past and it could be so exciting to her that she doesn't actually know what the proper response should be because she hasn't been trained to know her boundaries. She just knows that it is so good to her that she has no idea what the right way is to respond to this newfound kindness she is being shown.

Rita is the horse you needed. She is showing you how important discipline is. As an animal 'guardian' 'shepherd' 'husband', animals need discipline just like the rest of us. If you're interested, there are ways to teach you to talk *with* your animals, not just *at* them. I agree that you need to cool your jets, and calm down when you're around Rita especially. Two sentient beings with high-octane energy lead to zero learning for both. Learning her language will lead to less stress and more happiness all around. Start with just being together, no camera, no chatter, learn to love silence, you'll hear so much more. Start with 5 minutes, don't talk, focus on her, how she breathes, how her breath changes, if she leans in etc. It's pretty satisfying.

hierarchy is so important to herd animals like horses, and with Rita being young and spirited, she needs constant reminders to be 'social'. Think of the teenagers that think they're bigger and tougher than everyone. They act all antisocial one minute and need a hug from mom the next. The other horses will allow her to be with them and included when she approaches with a calm attitude, but when she approaches with high energy, and barreling into the older horses, she's going to be reprimanded with a show of teeth, ears back and moved along. She's not doing any of it with malice, she's just got so much energy and wants to rile up the others sometimes to get them to move and run and play, but as a herd animal she has to learn to listen to the herd in order for them all to stay safe as a group of prey animals. With you, Rita is able to make you scream, and run and can push you around, so she's taking advantage. BUT the important thing to teach her, as soon as possible, that it's not ok to do that with humans. She knows she can't with the horses. They constantly keep her in check, but if you don't give her the small corrections when she lets her 'playful and rebellious' side show towards you, she's learning that she can push humans around because she's more powerful than you. That's when she'll grow to be a dangerous horse. She's not now. She's young and learning all the time. Pushing the boundaries to see what she can get away with. It's hard to stay on top of the behavior if you're nervous, but your 'spanky stick' is invaluable as a deterrent for that. Just ask yourself 'would you let your kids get away with acting out to older folks, acting aggressive and disrespectful in a social situation' your boys are sweet and respectful as the community on morrow hill, their moms and extended family, and school etc have taught them the rules of how to act to others, you just need to remember that's what you're doing with Rita. You're not breaking her spirit or changing her personality, you're teaching how to be a good member of society, and when and how to play appropriately. Don't worry though, you're all doing really well with her. You'll get there. Love you guys

Lester, I’m sure this woman means well and I do agree when you first got Rita, she was playful because she was excited to be in a loving environment. when a horse constantly puts their ears back followed by bad behavior, that is not playful and there is a pecking order in groups of horses and Rita is trying to find her spot in that pecking order. she will test the other horses and she will as you know, will test you as well to see how much she can get away with. Do not make a mistake by thinking that she is always playful and that’s why she is behaving this way because if you do you will end up injured. Rita is a young horse that needs a lot of training by an experience person so she can grow to be a very well-rounded horse. I said it early on that these horses need bridals because you do need some kind of control over these horses when leading them. I grew up with lots of horses and trust me, they will take advantage if you let them.

I myself think that she is very happy where she’s at and I think she got better since she’s been there. It’s gonna take a little time but I think it’s a very good start. Good luck with that and I do love Rita. She’s like one of my favorites, but I love all horses, well God bless and sending prayers always

Lester, I do agree that Rita is not trying to harm you. She is giving you love bites/nips. They definitely do hurt though, so yes, you will have to teach her. Patience can work wonders with both children and animals. I have great faith in you and Jami. Rita does love both of you, and she is living her best life with you, Jami, Storm, Buc-ees and Voodoo, at Longhorn Lester's. 🥰

I'm enjoying seeing the progress of Rita. Fun fact my mother lived 16 years thinking her name was Rita. The house burned down and the needed a birth certificate at 16 when she found out her birth name was Reba!😂 she applied for 2 birth certificates before she found out! 😂😂😂

Yes, I think that is good advice, after all Rita is still so young. At the same time, being very cautious is not a bad idea. You are doing better all the time Lester. It's obvious Rita is also trying to improve. Don't sell either you or Rita short please!! 💞 Janice

Lester. You're doing a fantastic job with the horses!! You have improved so much from when you first met Rita. She loves you Lester. She walks right up to you for loves. She truly trusts you. That's huge in forming a relationship with an animal. Keep on keepin' on Sir!

Rita’s face looks less grey- maybe it’s the lighting in this video. I think Rita is a loving horse. Just young and playful. 🤠💕🐴

I think your right Lester. If I get excited so does my dog. I think animals sense how we are feeling and react to that.

Hi Lester. I'm scared of horses. When I was 5 yrs old my 10 yr old brother chased me with his horse, I fell and the horse ran over me. So Rita makes me really nervous to watch. Jami is so sweet after what she went through. Have a blessed Saturday.

GHOST...I miss this song! Maybe you can play it now and again. I like the song you played today but it does remind me of the song Ghost.

I wish people could just watch the videos and enjoy them for what they are. Even though everyone has an opinion, it doesnt always need to be heard. I really hope you never let these people discourage you from making videos. Because I can guarantee you, I love you AND the videos.

I totally get that she wants to play but I think there's certain things that can hurt and cause injury and I totally get where you're coming from I think you and Jamie are doing a outstanding job with all your animals it shows she loves you

The lady is correct. Think back to our own children, mom's were on alert when kids are having so much fun together but soon something goes wrong and one is now crying, usually from a minor booboo or hurt feelings because another child was so overstimulated that they ran into another child too hard or some such thing. Rita will outgrow that as children do. With the right guidance from you :))

I think Thoroughbreds are naturally more high spirited and harder to “break”. They love to run. She’ll be a great horse with a lot of work. But it will be more work than with Stormy. She loves you and the time you take with her, but it’s like dealing with a toddler. She’ll take it too far every time. She’s pushing boundaries.

You have gotten a whole lot better with Rita. I would be scared to death. Let’s just say I have a healthy respect for the horses. You will get there with Rita one day at a time. Round pen is coming along. Be safe. ❤😊❤
