If you want a deathworld tamed, you ask deathworlders to tame it. All they want in payment is OLD/OUTDATED equipment and carcasses? That's a pretty good deal. A civilization on the run meeting a civilization just becoming extra-solar. One needing help and the other willing to give it. This sounds like the start of a great series.

The walking nightmare known as humanity doing good deeds for our galactic neighbors.
Story 1: Humans are like "I have no idea what you're saying, but I like the cut of your jib." I can only imagine that the animals taste delicious, and that would probably disturb the aliens more; the same 'monsters' that they're so afraid of are actually just less scary than deer and we clean them up for them simply because it's an easy source of meat. Humans are more like monsters ourselves in that story; hard to understand and eager to kill and consume. Fortunately for the mining xenos that we don't care for eating sapients. Story 2: Sharing food is always a good way to build bonds. Just keep them away from Substance C.

Alien race begs for humans to help them exploit the resources on a deathworld... the humans turn it into a hunting retreat instead. Really liked the way they did the transmissions in that second one, especially with conveying the proper feel with music. Maybe a bit risky if the ones they met had attacked at the first war images, but at the same time not hiding anything... showing them Humanity, warts and all.

Things like that second one are what I love about science fiction. The hope that no matter how dark the situation is now, there can be a better tomorrow. That we ultimately want to be good to others... I have to believe this. Life is just too hard and too sad otherwise.

1st story: Aliens: we desperately need to mine a planet. Humans: meh, not our problem. Aliens: and there are these monsters on the planet *shows pictures Humans: wait, they have giant wild boars and other wildlife? Guys, I think we found a perfect place for recreational hunting and BBQ. And, we will get paid for it. Yoohoo. 2nd Story: and that's how we created a translator - through math, music and shared meals, and it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I can see how we came to be so disrespectful to the poor galactic community. "They want to pay us to deal with... the weeds and some big cows? Will they even last long enough to pay us? These are miners right, and they cant even handle a big cow. What were they planning on busting rocks with that cant handle a big cow? Tell them we'll do it, but only if we get the flora and fauna since they want the minerals. That's probably the only way we'll see a payday out of this."

For the second story, that was the Fibonacci sequence that was communicated. One of the theorized things for a first contact scenario is to communicate principles of mathematics, because mathematics are constant and can be easily communicated regardless of a language barrier.

1st Story: Explanation to the Aliens - We humans evolved on a deathworld, where we had to both protect ourselves from a myriad of dangerous predators, each far physically superior to us, and where we also had to hunt any number of dangerous prey animals for food, also far physically superior to us. Hunters who could bring down the biggest predator and prey animals became universally admired heroes to our societies, showered with praise and prestige. Although the times are long gone when humans had to struggle to survive against dangerous beasts, the instincts of tens of thousands of years of hunting still remain in many of us. Many still crave the challenge of besting a beast that's physically superior to us. And oh yeah, many of us humans also love trying out food we've never eaten before, for the taste.
