This is one of the best episodes of the HWY PATROL series. I love how Crawford handles the ending like it's just another day at the office: he tells Ken to join him for a smoke. lightingbug, your comments are well said. This was a tremendous show ... and, in spite of a lot of changes in the past years ... it holds up very well. Additionally, the show was produced for very little money, yet it had excellent writing and gave a lot of actors their first real chance.

Over the course of this series, the big 3 automakers clamored to have the producers use their vehicles as patrol cars.. Originally, GM furnished a fleet of Buicks. Then Ford provided Mercurys. Then Chrysler provided Dodge Coronets. Nothing better than free advertising.

Normally it's Mathews and maybe one other unit collaring the crooks at the end but we have a more realistic half dozen or more outside. This is one of only 2 episodes that were partially filmed at night (the other being "Father Thief in 1955) Crawford is at his best here, never missing a line or flubbing one. Even though the shot diner had an even chance of survival, the thug still went to prison. His thigh bone was damaged and he probably lost that leg from the wait for treatment. Whenever a homesick trucker tries to sneak in an extra 30 minutes of driving time so he can sleep at home, someone tries to enjoy the trill of speed, or an adult tries to make an adult decision like not wearing a helmet or seatbelt, a petty group of jack boot thugs swing into action.
