Housesteads fort in Northumberland was a fortified Roman encampment on Hadrians wall. Built around AD 122, the fort was one of thirteen under control of the Romans to defend what was known as Britannia from the northern tribes.
Today the fort is one of the best known and preserved examples of Roman existence in England, it is also home to the oldest toilets you will ever see.
