Yes! From here, I would personally like to see focus put into a game's use of *transitions* from scene to scene. There would have to be some creative use of assets being preloaded in the cache, which get to remain in the next scene, but come on! We need some solid, artistic cuts from scene to scene instead of simple cutting to black (which is just a blank void to dump the cache).

It is possible that Frostbite was forked to the sports games first, and from there Dragon Age. But I really doubt it's a meaningful distinction. The issue is really just that the framework for such a game simply didn't exist for Frostbite. Whereas Bioware had been working in some form of UE for a hell of a stretch there. And UE was designed to be super extensible to begin with.

I wonder how the people who work on Jali feel right now, after the controversy that happened to Cyberpunk. Some NPCs' mouths doesn't even move when they talk. I'm talking about random NPCs on the street and other minor ones, not the big ones of course. Major NPCs like Judy is awesome and looks lifelike, but on the other hand on PS4 her hair has a strange shimmery effect that sometimes obscure her face expression. The good stuff is often buried in very deep in this game.

Initially I’m always worried about technologies like this replacing animators-especially since the industry already places better graphical technology so far above artistic skill and style-but I have to remember that for a lot of these games (particularly big RPGs) manual animation was never really an option. I hope that this technology frees up time and money allowing animators to work on more desired stuff and less frustrating grunt work :)

A small tidbit of constructive criticism is that some of the video's edits could have been just a hair tighter to help with flow. It still sounds pretty basic. We also need different personalities that respond differently when they are in the same mood, and there are more than just a handful of moods. Also, there should be some incorporation of body language in all speech. For example, when someone talks quietly they often lean in, but if they're lounging they may lean back instead or turn their head away from the person they're talking to. The clips you demonstrated still were obviously fake because they didn't take any of the above into consideration. Some really good footage for that (which is probably motion capped) is the crazy guy from most far cry games after 2.

I just finished Cyberpunk 2077 and switched to Horizon Zero Dawn (both on PC), and the difference in facial animation and voice acting is geniunely staggering. HZD looks like matrix rubber dolls when showing emotions on the faces, since most of the time the expression everyone has is just a dead-pan look, the switch to an emotion just feels sudden and, when matching up to the script-reading, just doesn't match up to 2077.

Retargeting between languages is an interesting thing I hadn’t fully thought about. In film vfx we are often having to make a choice between hand keying and using direct drive that makes it difficult to animate on top of unless you spend a lot of time on the training. Building a system from the ground up with the goal of getting the interpreted data into the rig is cool . I have to say while that’s totally impressive the facial range in the examples in cyberpunk compared to some of the other examples still look super compressed so I’m not sure if this is really selling the idea... it feels like you skipped an important piece by not talking about FACS, which uses more shapes for its base expressions.
@MoonShadowWolfe

Okay, I'm not gonna pretend I wouldn't be the same way. With that said, these animators look so uncomfortable to be on camera that they could be AI puppets themselves. I'm seeing a lot of confusion in where the eyes should be pointing, and the freezing is happening more than enough to notice. Alas, they would know how to fix that in an NPC.

the tech jali is putting out is going to be a great time and resource saver for animators for sure, but i do have one nitpick. i think its important to note that immersion does not equal realism. immersion is usually how pulled into the game you are. realism can play a factor into it but undertale is considered incredibly immersive as are a lot of simple graphic quality games. new vegas may not have had the best facial expressions (it was made in under 18 months on fallout 3's piss poor assets and engine), but it is still incredibly more immersive than fallout 4. good video highlighting the new stuff coming to the game industry though!
