Anyone reading this. Prison is not the one. Value the freedom you are having. Hearing these guys talk about their experiences inside makes my blood rush. I’m glad to be free and I’m going to maintain that with all my being, simple.

Phaka means phakama. Phakama means to stand up for the number. That means that one have to stab someone to make the number strong - after it has been weakened by some incident - like the warder snatching the money or drugs from the number gangster.

@@whawha9016 because children of war are not civil, they know "kill or be killed". Most of middle class South Africa will never understand the depths of fear living in a war zone, only to have the people tell them things like: "you can make it out if you work hard." or "education is the way out" or "you people are just lazy". People on the cape flats, Alex, Nyanga and all the other ghetto's risk their lives every day just walking out the front door. My cousin lived in Manenberg, was a an A student and got caught in cross fire walking home from school. She wasn't a gang member, just a person who lived in a war zone. When you are used to walking past dead bodies on your way to school in the morning, how can you be soft enough to be civil?

@@Alvinslife37 My condolences about what happened to your cousin! How can the vicious cycle be interrupted? It's the behavioural patterns of people that make these neighbourhoods a war zone. So that's where we would have to start the intervention: not a destructive, primal "dog eat dog mindset", but an elevated, communal, level headed and constructive mindset.
@Alvinslife37

@@whawha9016 I don't have the answers, but finding a means to enable access to opportunities safely is key. Kid's don't get educated the way they should in these types of communities because of many factors, two keys issues to me are safety getting to school, and safety at home. They are in danger all the time, so it is difficult to interrupt without getting safety sorted out in the community. We need better engagement with the core issue, unemployment. Employment issues dominate the space because of the fall out it creates. Gang activity is created by financial difficulties and feelings of powerlessness. Dad beats the kid at home, dad doesn't provide or is absent altogether and so the boy finds belonging, power and money in the gang and a means to level scores with dad, now, that is simplistic microcosm of the complex issue of gangs and unemployment, but the core issue remains, employment creates safety (food and otherwise). Countries with the lowest levels of violent criminal activity are also the ones with the highest employment rates. That correlation cannot be denied. We also need a properly functioning reformation system (a prison that really attempts to reform and not just punish), a properly functioning police service that is not corrupt and a government that genuinely cares about its citizens. They have the means to effect genuine change by improving opportunities to education, which in turn provides better options for employment and ultimately, a means to move toward a prosperous life.
