As a touring cellist in the Dover Quartet, I have to keep myself in shape physically and mentally to stay on top of my game. Beyond the incredible psychological benefits of exercise, the RIGHT kinds of exercise can DRASTICALLY reduce your risk of injury when practicing your instrument. Too often, friends of mine (usually professional classical musicians) have confided in me that they want to exercise but they are afraid they will hurt themselves; ironically, this leaves your body MUCH more at risk for injury due to the inherent imbalances caused by playing a string instrument.
In this first video, I discuss why gymnastic rings are THE PERFECT tool for a musician and go over the VERY basic pulling exercises you can start with to put your body on the road to balance, strength, and health.
Happy practicing!!
