Great video, Camden! Totally agree that this quartet is deceptively difficult (same with Dvorak "American"). I really love how you break it down. You've illustrated so clearly what I've been talking to my students about for years. Will definitely be sharing this with them!

This is a fantastic video - super clear and helpful for any cellist trying to understand and improve the body mechanics of playing. Thanks so much Camden!!

I LOVE this and I’m so mad I didn’t see this last year when I performed this. I think I’ve always shifted with larger body parts, but this would have settled my stress about the opening melody!

Interesting that you play the A natural stopped and not a harmonic. I looked at 5 KZitem videos of this opening and every cellist plays a harmonic A. (Including the Borodin quartet).

That's a good catch, thanks for pointing that out! I personally don't find the harmonic to be as beautiful. It makes the solo a little easier, and we've all heard it so many times that we're desensitized to it; but you'll notice (for instance, in the Borodin Quartet performance you've watched) that the violinists almost never play the harmonic in response, and it usually sounds much more "sung." my view is that we've become accustomed to the sound of cellists "cheating" in the opening. But, to each their own- and some people may prefer the harmonic!

Great demonstrations and explanations! You are really doing positive service for cello instruction. Perhaps consider demonstrating a single shift as a starting point for cellists who need to analyze the movements in detail before applying it to the music which requires multiple shifts. Perhaps the shifting up might also have some differences from the shifting down? If so, I would love to see the demonstration of the two separately. Thank you for your wonderful playing and teaching!
