This is intended to be a tutorial on how to apply a water slide decal on a guitar headstock. Unfortunately, I don't have a blank headstock so I used a wooden clothes hanger instead.
I modified the Elmer's Glue technique from scale model hobbyists, by applying the glue directly on the wet surface instead of mixing it in the decal release water dip. It is not necessary but it adds strength to the adhesion of the decal to the surface, especially when the decal is over soaked in water and much of its gum adhesive has been dissolved. If a topcoat will be applied over the decal, applying glue will just add an extra layer which will require additional layers of top coat to cover, particularly when the glue is not diluted or is applied too thick.
Brushing or rubbing finishing may not be appropriate on other water slide decals because they are delicate and flimsy, or otherwise cheaply made. Consult the decal manufacturer regarding this matter. If you are not sure, use a paint spray gun or a aerosol spray can. I brushed on the varnish in this tutorial because I made the decal myself and I know it is durable although it is very thin.
I hope this tutorial helps.
