Tim Hoogland makes great products and is a real asset to the 3D printing community. He does pretty regular livestreams to keep us educated, pushes the Marlin project to get things fixed and reliable, does lots of testing, and on top of it all is helping us to crack down on violations of the Marlin GPL license. And, yeah, I really like the EZABL on my CR-10S. It’s simple, reliable, accurate, and was very easy to install. I don’t use G29 too often, since you can save the probe results to EEPROM, but when you really need to re-level a bed it saves lots of time.

Hi, I have some questions according to this project: 1. I am going to buy an inductive sensor, but it lacks this "control box". What actually is inside of it? Do I really need this? Or can I make my own? I simply cannot afford to pay 50€ on an abl sensor :/ 2. Is the Bed already leveled as good as possible, before beginning this project? Or does this really not care at all, after installing the sensor? 3. In the video was said that there was overextrusion and that the z-offset had to be corrected. Do you increase or decrease it in such a situation? And by how much? Thanks a lot.

thanks for this video I fitted an ezabl yesterday and would never have got it working without your vid. the manufacturer instructions are a bit cryptic at points (especially the instructions for making a bootloader and flashing the firmware but your other video on that issue also got me sorted) I did a couple of things different tho, I wired the power for the control board directly into the power supply (less fiddly than messing around on the board) I also completely removed the zstop switch so I could use the T nuts and bolts to mount the control box. another thing worth mentioning is that they have revised the control board and it now has a plug that you connect your zstop to directly so no need to make up cables or cut wires. all working great now. thanks m8

So I finished the whole thing, tested it and all worked fine..Thank You for the great Videos! - Now for the bad news: I went to close up the motherboard cover and didn't realize a small screw was in there laying on the motherboard and I fried something, even heard a little "pop". Now I have to plug in the USB to make the printer even turn on but the ABL isn't working and the screen is very dim almost unreadable... Without the USB it won't even turn on. So, I ordered a new Creality 3D v.1.1.3 main board and will have to do the whole process again from scratch when it gets here tomorrow. Bootloader, Marlin, EZABL, TH3D.... OMG!

Did you have to modify your probe mount settings at all? I uncommented petsfang but my sensor doesn't auto home directly in the center of the bed. Any ideas?
@TeachingTech

Masure the x and y offset from the centre of the probe to the tip of the nozzle, enable custom mount instead of petsfang and scroll down ower in the file to put your offsets. Depending on how the grid issetup in the firmware it is common for the probing points to be slightly offset from centre to match the way the probe is to one side.

As a noob to 3D printing, this seems like a lot of work as compared to just manually leveling the Ender 3 (pro) with just some code and a piece of paper. What am I missing? $60 is cheap, the firmware upgrade is intimidating. On average, what percentage does this improve prints? 10%- 20%?
@justavian

I'd like to understand this as well. When i see "auto bed leveling", i think the probe is actually going to get the bed level. But maybe it's just recording offsets at each point, so that the extruder can better follow the contours of the plate? Or does it tell you how much to adjust each knob? I don't get it...

Hi I love your channel and I have recently purchased an Ender 3, the second revision. I have followed your tutorial’s and my machine after tweaking produces amazing high quality prints. One problem I had was removing the prints from the bed and yesterday the centre part of the bed lifted and ripped. Before I built the unit I purchased 3 mirrors cut to the Ender 3 sizes as a number of KZitemrs recommend them. I also remembered you mentioning that you had a few beds delaminating. My problem is that I have no idea how to setup the machine for the mirror bed. KZitem currently has no clear tutorials for the Ender 3 or any other printer. I would also like to add a glass mirror bed to my original 3D printer the Snapmaker 3 in 1. I live in Sydney and can supply a glass mirror if you are interested in producing a video .

Hi Ewen, thanks for watching and for the nice feedback. Most of the time all you need to do is remove the factory buildtak surface, place the mirror down, clip on binder clips in the corners and level the bed to account for the new thickness. I'll be covering this soon.

I'm at a total loss all of a sudden. When I use a piece of paper to find my Z-Offset it always ends up in the Positive. Usually around +.008. Everything is tight and moves freely. If I try an M119 everything triggers as per usual and an M48 gives me an output of .00745. As soon as I attempt a G29 the Nozzle will literally push down onto the bed and attempt to push through it causing the Probe to fail. Do you have any idea of what might be going on?

Mini uses a smaller diameter sensor, so you can sense more of the bed -- make sure the mount you use is designed for a 12mm vs 18mm sensor. For a smaller printer like an ender 3 -- the smaller sensor is better since it's easier to design a mount without sacrificing build area.

How important are the manual leveling knobs below the bed after installing this kit? Nobody mentions them and I am very confused.
@slkgeothermal
3 жыл бұрын
Your bed needs to be as flat as possible to start with or without auto bed leveling. I retained my adjustable bed setup to fine tune the bed as needed. You have an option of getting solid spacers that take the place of the bed leveling springs and makes the adjustment knobs simply a way to hold the solid spacers in place. I replaced the factory hot bed springs with much stiffer springs (you can find the stiffer springs on Amazon) and set them adjusted well down to make them really stiff so they act very much like the solid (non adjusting) bed spacers. The thing you have to consider is the way the auto bed leveling works, it does not level the bed itself, it makes the hot end, Z axis move up or down to compensate for an out of level bed. Your Z axis is chasing the out of level of you hot bed, not adjusting your actual hot bed. The best answer for superior results is make the hot bed as level as possible so the Z axis can just do its job and not have to feed in extra up or down baby steps movement because you are too lazy to manually adjust the bed level. My experience has been that a manually, well adjusted hot bed will not need adjustment if your printer is left undisturbed after a comprehensive manual leveling. Find a permanent spot for your printer, level the hot bed and leave it alone. When you do move the printer, manually check the bed level, this is best done with a sheet of printer paper as a gage and a lot of fine tuning. The place the auto bed leveling helps you it if your bed is warped so an all points manual leveling is not possible. Try not to press on the hot bed with excessive force especially with an Ender 3 which has only a single travel rail to hold the hot bed level. Keep your travel rollers adjusted and clean. Any slop in the bed rollers is adding to the print error. I hope this helps with your question.

The amount of squish for the first layer matters a lot. Also keep in mind with the glass bed on top, it will take longer for the heat to seep up to the top. The thermister underneath might be reading 60 deg C but the top of the glass might only be 50 deg C. Maybe not your problem but something to consider.

I want to put in a 2.0ver BigTreeTech board and touch screen to my Ender 3, I currently have an EZABL and a Bullseye fan device installed and would like to see if you could help me get it setup in the firmware to work.

Hey Michael. Great walk-through and very concise. I''ve been emailing with Tim for a while in preparation to getting the EZABL, Tim is very responsive and helpful, he really knows his stuff too. I haven't yet ordered the EZABL because I found that I still have an unused BLTouch ( I brought it a couple of years ago when building a homebrew is, but never used it). I plan to fit the BLTouch and give it a try first (since I already have it). Looking forward to your BLTouch video and you thoughts/comparisons.

Hi Spike, thanks for watching and commenting. BLtouch I'm a fan of from other printers. They should both be good so it will come down to specific pros and cons for each individual if they want ABL.

I've just ordered the EZABL too, can't deny it's a bit extravagant lol. I've mounted the BLTouch, but having uncertainties with the config. Think I'll wait for your video, that way I'll know I've got it right. Will then try the EZABL when it arrives. Hoping to have room in the existing gromet for the additional wires, rather than drill more holes in the control box. Although I have the CR-10 S4 rather than the Ender 3, they are very similar (apart from the main board which I have the wiring diagram for) so should be all good...... Fingers crossed :-)

How are you able to set the z axis to negatve value?

The problem with the EZABL is, that it isn't very affordable for customers outside of the US. The cheapest shipping method to Germany still costs 25€

We're working with DHL right now to see if we can get shipping costs outside the US down. In a few months we will be expanding to having UK re-sellers as well. :)

got an issue with the sensor. it registers when i put my finger under it i can see the red light etc. but the printer continues to lower the Z axis. its like its not registering at all?

I had that exact same issue with the Eazy connect version. at 7:54 of this video he checks to see whether or not the probe is being triggered. And so whats happening is that even with the red light on, the printer will not read triggered. What needs to happen is you need to reverse the two leads from the Z trigger ting. Google "ezabl not triggering" and choose the first Z not showing TRIGGER test, and you will see what I mean. Best of luck!

@@killmanx27 found out in the end the Z cable needed to switch the polarity which goes from the printer to the ezabl board. I just made up a cone tion converter with the sMe plug type

Nice, but autobed leveling on a e3 is a bit overkill I think. The e3 is so easy to level when you have marlin flashed. I takes me about 60 seconds and I just do it every 2 weeks while the printer is printing 24/7....

I haven't had to ply with mine since my first prints but a lot of people have complained about warped beds. It will make a significant difference for them.

Is everything the same.for the new EZABL Pro?

I just put on a pro mini, had to use tinkercad to cut down the top of the petsfang bullseye mount for the probe, to get it to sit at the desired 2mm above the nozzle, but other than that, dang near plug and play, really is if you buy the USB verison.

You didn't need to get a bootloader for your Ender 3? (The Arduino Uno to be able to flash the board) According to their website you need to get a bootloader to be able to flash to the Ender-3 Board.

Wow, thanks a lot for the video! There is some work to do to add this needed feature to the Ender3.
After adjusting Babystep Z, go to Save settings to EEPROM. This saves the babystep value just like Z offset. Always save settings after adjusting anything.
