In this video, Javi will show you two drills that you can use to improve your forward and backward mobility when hitting a backhand slice shot. The focus will be totally on the footwork so the player should be familiar with the execution of the backhand slice itself in order to make the most out of these drills.
There are two types of footwork covered in this video - side steps and crossover steps. Side steps are used when there is little distance to cover while positioning yourself to hit a backhand slice, moving forwards or backwards on the tennis court. Crossover steps are quicker and thus used for covering longer distances backwards (forwards mobility is just normal running). In both drills, the player should start preparing their racket as soon as they start moving forwards or backwards. Placing some additional cones on the baseline can help them return to the correct starting point.
These drills are not very intense, so we recommend that you do 10 sets of 10 balls each and take a short 45 to 60 seconds rest in between. But if you feel like you can do more, go ahead!
