In this video Javi is teaching a player to hit an attacking shot approaching the net. This shot is often used by higher level players to convert balls that land short into powerful attacking shots or even winners that end the point.
Hitting attacking shots from mid-court puts pressure on your opponent and it's vital to execute these powerfully but without losing accuracy or control, as without these a ball hit from this position and angle could easily land out. But also, being this close to the net, the shot needs to be aggressive or else the player will find themselves facing a lob or a passing shot - both extremely disadvantageous situations. Javi suggests that the semi-open stance should be used for these kind of attacking shots, preparing the racket high and hitting the ball from a higher angle than usual.
Javi recommends this drill for players of intermediate or advanced level, as the incoming ball will have a lot of height and pace, which players of lower levels don't yet encounter in their gameplay and so have little experience with. The way to attack balls as they are dropping would be to hit them at shoulder-height. If the player wants to attack even more aggressively, they can hit them as they're rising, making contact at chest-height. Javi demonstrates how to practice both of these shots. He places cones at the other end of the court so the player can practice aiming the ball into the optimum target zones.
Later, Javi demonstrates two variations of this drill. The first one is to alternate hitting a forehand approach and an inside-out forehand shot, with no target zone. This drill is for intermediate players. The second one is for players of higher levels, and involves placing 4 extra cones on the service line of the player's side of the court. Each cone represents a different target zone that the player will have to direct the ball into, hitting either cross-court or down-the-line shots depending on which area the short ball lands into.
This drill is great for when you're training your attacking skills, and we recommend you do 5 sets of 10 balls each and always remember to take a short 1-min rest in between. Enjoy!
