Thanks for the video, you did a good job. I ordered a dash cap for my 98 TA (146.00 on Ebay) and I was worried that I will need some professional help to install it, but you made it look like a do it yourself job.

When investing in a new dash cover, you should think of reinforcing it with a thin layer of fiberglass. This is an easy straight forward operation and will render the new dash cover pretty much bulletproof to sun and heat. If you really want to go one step further, you can cover it with a thin faux-leather vinyl, and the dash cover will last forever.

TIMEtoRIDE900 Nope. Doesn't rattle at all. Your dash is different only on the front portion, the part that this covers is identical on all 4th gen F bodies.

I wish there was a decent quality stamped steel replacement available at a reasonable price. Back in the day the upper dash area was steel like in my 1971 Firebird and basically all cars. You didn't have to worry about replacing that.

It was shot in color, same camera as all of my videos going up to the C4 corvette raving review. Probably something to do with the bright sun, silver car and black/charcoal grey interior. But again, the information is good and doesn't require color to be valid, you're just nitpicking. That's odd, since your own videos either look like they were shot with a potato, or have the audio quality of a portable transistor radio.

You can buy a new dash cap directly from gm for less than 100 dollars and it will be made of better material than the original. Don't use anything to clean it except mild soap like dawn or ivory diluted 1 part soap to 20 parts water. Don't use armorall, ever. My 95 dash cap is original and the car has never been garaged. I have the opposite problem on a 95 base firebird. The dash cap is in pristine condition, it's the crash pad that has cracks. I picked up another one for free at a junk yard which is in worse condition than mine. So far I have removed the skin and old cement. Tomorrow I will do the new vinyl and also recover the passengers side airbag cap. I had to opt for new oem vents though. 16 dollars each.

How much do these dash caps usually cost?? I have a 1994 Camaro Z28 and the original is cracked in a few places but not like crazy, the only spot I'm worried about is the center vent for the front windshield defrost is completely broken out, do they make a dash cap that has the defrost vents? Thanks!! for any help
@316Autos
7 жыл бұрын
I paid $200 for the cap. Don't know if they make one with the defrost vents in there. Worst case, you can get a factory pad for around $300-$400.

Love the name, DOOM was my first PC game. I had a V6 car that had the cap and nothing else. It didn't look good, it was warped and didn't fit properly. At this point you're probably better off just getting a new pad.

Thanks. I love Doom. and ugh god the dash cap just came in the mail today...lol. ..Im not that car savvy; so please explain what a pad is? yikes...tell me you dont mean another dash pad..
@316Autos
8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I meant another dash pad. What you might be able to do is get a piece of Styrofoam that's maybe 1/2 inch thick, use the new cap as a template and glue the cap to it. Would stiffen it up and might stop it from warping.
@doomguy8324

JC316 well I did use a few of the old cracked pieces. And the foam pad from the old one was still I tact. So I put it in top of that. Still think it's a total screw up?
@316Autos

You're fine. Just so long as there is something under it, it will be OK. The V6 I was talking about had NOTHING under the pad, it was the bare electronics of the upper dash.

When I bought my shit 12 years ago it had a dash mat, it was a clean car I had it about a year (I was always cleaning it) and one day through the windshield I saw cracks, took the dash cover off and was horrified by what I saw, that top piece was fucked, I thought to myself where the fuck am I going to find one of these in this color? I tried plastic welding it, shit the thing was too far gone, fortunately I had a friend who was computer savvy and he hooked me up with GM parts gave them my vin and about $400.00 later,(with shipping) I had a brand new one in my hands in the perfect matching color! I was elated,I put that bitch in and every day I hope and pray that it will last! PS, the car in question is my 97 T/A, hotrod/ weekend toy, it's my baby!😀😀😀

Oh my lord people just buy a new or used dash pad cover and be done with it. What this guy probably isn't telling you is all the rattling you're going to hear with all the busted pieces. Don't be cheap and just buy an oem dashpad. And also people please if you need both hands to do a job have a friend do the camera work for ya.

First off, it's an Fbody, rattles are a part of the package. That said, there was no additional noise from this fix, it was glued down. Not sure on the pricing, but back when I did this, an OEM dash pad was $400+, where the cap was $200.

when i realized how thin that stock dash pad is, what the fuck like GM couldnt have done worse then third gen dash pads. yup they did. that piece of shit is not much thicker then paper. the 4th gen interior is nothing but plastic, as cheap as is it; most of it holds up OK if you are "nice" to it. all they had to do was go a little thicker on that craptasic dash pad.
@316Autos

Same goes for most of GM from that era. The cavalier/sunfire have to be the worst offenders. Even the engine vibrations crack the dash on those.
