Hi Margaret:) it was lovely how you made sure not to waste any indigo and managed with limited things and yet didn't limit yourself! Thanks for that encouragement. The results are so delightful 😍 I wanted to ask you for how long can I preserve the dye and if I need to heat the vat up when I add more indigo

Hi Amruthavk - thank you for joining us and for the kind words 💙 Indigo vats can be 'scary', so I'm happy this video gave encouragement to just try no matter what - success! I agree that these blues were truly special...lucky for sure. An indigo vat can last for as long as it is cared for, and even if it 'goes to sleep', it can often be nudged back with some love. You will need to add indigo and balance it once you notice the blue lightening on first dips. Vats prefer warmer temperatures, so you may need to heat them to keep them happy, but I never had to reheat this particular vat during my residency. Give it a go!

Hi Margaret, I’ve just suscriben to your Chanel right after watching this video, I’m a weaver from Oaxaca, I make rugs using a pedal loom (I’d love to share some picture of my work with you), I use different plants to get several colors including indigo but I’ve never seen this technique it seems easier than the ones I’ve tried before. How wonderful to have you join the Color Quest family - welcome! Would love to see your work, so please feel free to reach out via email with some photos 💙 I worked with so many incredible plants in Oaxaca (pericon, muicle, huzaiche) as well as cochineal and indigo. I was very impressed with how well the henna indigo vat worked and the blue was divine. Best of luck if you give this a try!

Many thanks, Barbara - I was also super happy with the depth of blue I got with this type of vat. The henna is used in this vat as the reducing agent instead of fructose. I chat a bit about this in the first part of the video after the introduction. I really enjoyed working with henna even though it is slightly more difficult to dissolve. I think the color was a very warm option. Give it a try!

Hi. Such a gorgeous vat. But you do need a lot of indigo. I have some dried henna leaves. Could I use these if I crumble them or should I use the leaves after dyeing some other fabric? Have you had any experiences with dried leaves?
@MargaretByrdColorQuest

Hi Andrea 💙 I adored the warmer undertones of this henna vat - it was awesome! I have only ever used the henna powder and since it is has never been used before, I suspect it would be 'stronger' than using henna that had been used to dye with. However, I say why not give it a try? You can start with the same ratios, and if it is not reducing to the clear amber hue, you can always add more henna 'mash'. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Regarding the indigo, I used a percentage that would yield a medium blue in the vat. You can always use less indigo for a lighter hue and slowly build up color through multiple dips.

Enjoyed watching the video and got great information... I had a question that this wet can be kept for some time? And what? Can the yarn or fabric be dyed in the director bath or taken in a separate vessel as required..? Thank you 😊😊🙏
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
Жыл бұрын
Hi Sanjot - thanks for joining us at Color Quest! I'm not sure I understand your question exactly. If you are asking about how long you can keep a vat, as long as you take care of it, it can last indefinitely. You will need to add indigo as the color starts to lighten (you will notice that your first dip is not as dark) and also check that the reduction and pH levels stay in balance. You will want to keep the indigo dye bath in the same vat that you build and dye directly in that without moving it to another vessel. Vat's don't like to be moved around :)

@@sanjotvelji7659 A pH level in the range of 9-12 is good depending on what reducing agent you use. Aiming for 10-11 is a great goal.

Do you need to warm the vat again the next day?
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
Жыл бұрын
Great question, Katerina - I did not heat the vat at all while I was using it for a few weeks after I built it and it worked fine. However, vats do like to be at a warm temperature, so if you have a way to heat the vat safely, it can be a useful way to keep your vat happy.

Hi Paulina 💙 I'm super sorry to hear you had some issues in the indigo vat - it can definitely happen and something I've certainly experienced through the years. Although it is really difficult to troubleshoot virtually, it is often tied to balancing, ie. the right combination of reducer (henna in this vat) and alkaline, as well as temperature. It sounds like you have kept your vat warm, but have you checked the pH of the vat? While the range can fall between 9-11, it's possible you are too high. Also, after stirring, did you let the sediment settle before trying a test strip? Was the color of the liquid a clear amber color before you tested it? You have not wasted your indigo, but you will need to slowly work to try to find a balance to encourage reduction so the indigo can adhere to the fiber. Don't give up!
@MargaretByrdColorQuest

@@paulinamejia4937 What is the pH of your vat? Are you sure your calx has not turned to chalk? That can happen with exposure to oxygen. What kind of henna did you use? There are so many factors, but by slowly working through different steps, you will learn so much about indigo - promise 💙

Can you do it with other dyes or just indigo?
@MargaretByrdColorQuest

Indigo and woad both need this type of reduced vat to allow its blue color to bond to fiber. Most other dyes will give their color simply with heat. There are certain lichens that need an ammonia vat extraction, but that is not the same as this type of vat. This is one of the reasons indigo is just so darn special ;o)

@@jessicabey275 You are always looking out for me! Maybe that's why my views are down the past 2 weeks - I've been too busy to respond :( A vat can last for years if it is well cared for, and you can often revive vats that have been left dormant.
