In this video I’ll be making an LED light up box sign.
I started by planing down my material to the correct thickness, before cutting the pieces to rough length ready to cut the miters on the table saw. This is the first time I’ve cut 45 degree miters at this length so I was a little apprehensive about it, but I took my time setting up a table saw sled as accurately as I could, and I couldn’t be happier with the result.
I wanted to make sure the LEDs inside would reflect as much light as possible so I painted the inside surfaces white before glueing up the box with the opal acrylic rebated in place. The back panel had to be removable so I used some neodymium magnets to secure it in place.
The LEDs I bought are powered by a usb cable. This gives lots of options for powering them. They can be lit up using the included battery box (4x AA batteries), or a 5v USB plug directly from a mains socket, or even from a power bank. I mounted the battery box to a length of wood that spans the internal width of the box as there was no space left on the sides of the box because of the led strip.
I applied 3 coats of danish oil as a finish, sanding lightly with 400 grit before each coat.
