Study Reviewed: Muscular Adaptations to Training Programs using the Nordic Hamstring Exercise or the Stiff Leg Deadlift in Rugby Players. Marchiori et al. (2021)
Training Subjects: Premier League Rugby Players. Very highly trained
RDL: Eccentric Accentuated but not eccentric overload.
Nordic Hamstring Curl: True Eccentric Overload. Only eccentric was performed for this study.
Magnitude of change was low. Likely due to highly trained status.
Making some inferences based on non-significant differences:
Nordic curls slightly better for hypertrophy and fascicle length (potentially beneficial for reduced risk of hamstring strain)
Other studies have shown a 50% reduction in risk of hamstring strain from using Nordic hamstring curls
CMJ may have increased slightly more in the stiff leg deadlift group (performed a concentric and did not overload eccentrics)
Interesting Application to the potential Reduction of Risk of Hamstring Strains (long head of the biceps femoris)
We can probably get a better outcome from combining both in different blocks of training throughout the year.
