Thank you for stopping by to watch our GMC Yukon XL rear bumper cover removal video. This bumper really hasn't changed much in style in some time. The older Yukon rear bumper covers are similar in style but may vary in length or bracket positioning. Also, this video can work un almost all the GMC brand SUV rear bumpers. The Cadillac Escalade, Suburban, and Tahoe all have similar styles/shapes, and a lot of the bumpers are the same across several years/models. We tip our hat for GMC being lazy, or genius for keeping a lot of these rear bumper covers the same.
TOOLS NEEDED:
You will need a 10mm & 8mm socket wrench, a panel clip removal tool, or a flat-head screwdriver for the clips. You will also need a T30 bits hex key for the top bumper bolts. You will need a drill to remove the rivets on the license plate bracket.
PROCESS:
As we mentioned before, this Yukon bumper the same as other GMC SUV bumpers and but follows the same style/engineering as many GMC SUVs. We started with removing the top bolts on the bumper which are hex bolts. Once the top of the bumper is complete, we removed the side bolts and clips along with the fender liner. Then we moved down to the lower bumper bolts. You will utilize your 10mm socket wrench to remove all the bolts. This bumper is petty easy to remove with the right tools, but be careful not to let this bumper fall or pull it away too quickly. You do not want to forcibly remove the parking sensor or wire harness from the bracket. Once you remove the bumper, don't forget to unplug the wire harness in the passenger corner. This harness is pretty unique, in that it's secured by a large connector. You have to pull the white lever or handle up away from the connector box. It can get stuck but you can use your panel clip removal tool or flat-head screwdriver to help you lift the lever.
After the bumper has been removed, we recommend you reuse any components on the rear bumper that you can. Take off the tow hitch cover by drilling out the rivets. Unscrew the harness and the two modules on each side. One of the modules has a rivet but it should be no problem at this point. When you remove the parking sensors, be very careful that you do not lose the circular rubber weather strips. They help the parking sensor sit in the cut-out so it does not get damaged. Don't forget to remove the small u-bolts or bolt clips that are on the sides of the bumper. Without these, you could not sure of a lot of the side bolts. The lower valance is held on by metal clips and snap-on tabs. Removing the rear bumper cover and taking off all the accessories are pretty easy. Drilling out the rivets for the license plate bracket may be a bit annoying but it's easy to do.
