How common is a waxed groupset? Is it a road-bike thing? Does it work in variable conditions?

I think it’s growing in popularity. It’s nicest asset is a clean groupset. Personally I think it takes a bit more upkeep in wet conditions and for the average rider it’s probably not justifiable but if your Top of the range groupset based it’s a no brainier

Someone with a waxed chain averaging 200 watts on a ride only loses about 6 watts avg to the entire drivetrain (97% efficiency). The claim for the powder is 6% additional reduction in drivetrain friction. So the powder only saves about 0.4 watts, not 8 watts. And side note, the powder is mostly PTFE (microplastic), and a good amount definitely becomes airborne when brushing it on, and some of it definitely makes its way into your lungs, so wear a very good mask. (also not that great environmentally)

sure you need to let the wax boil? letting wax into the air will do your chain no good, its also an explosive fire, looking for a spark, stay safe mate

Also, some good ingredients of the wax will be cooked away. You shouldn’t reach a boiling situation.

Wax can explode and get fire suddenly but only with a thermal shock

i usually melt and blend waxes by gas torch below big pan, locally , wax is surly near boiling point but in over 100 times never happened any problem

by testing when chain starts to wear, for pure(no aditives) wax it is 100km for road bike and less for mtb but depends how much dirty it is

The typical suggested average is to do so every 180-200 miles. If, however the chain has been through much water, more frequently (use microfiber cloth to give the chain a once over first).

I'm not convinced shame you can't buy a waxed chain already done just to try out.

I fought with wet lubes and dry lubes for years. Tried enigma wax this year- night and day difference. I dint presume that I will ever go back to lubes again. I just have so much less mess- and its smooth💕

maybe in first 10km, but after it is ok and as main benefit of wax is that chain lasts more than 6 times longer than on oil, proven in practice

Wax is better than oil for about 10 miles. After that it's protection is gone. Done listen to anyone who says otherwise. Wax is essentially riding without chain lube

I'm curious about your comment, I'm still doing tests but I get where you're coming from. The chain does get noiser faster with wax than with lube, noiser chain means chain with too much friction, which means the wax has fallen off. I'll do 3 more re wax cycles, since I have the theory that it's not the wax that lubes, but the Teflon that's mixed in with the wax; well, the mix I use at least. That's why I'll try to re wax a couple more times to let the Teflon set into the crevices and work from there, otherwise it's back to regular ol' dirty lube for me.

That’s not been my experience having waxed for the first time. I’ve only done 120 kms but the chain is still silent and seems lubed. Maybe you didn’t get all the air bubbles out?

Well, having experience of both MTB and road bike waxed chains I can confirm this it utter bull. I get a few hundred miles out of a fresh waxing, and top it up with a dripper after that. Full rewax as per the video every 1000 miles or so

@@Pablosammy1 I've only been getting 30 ish miles from regular dry lube before it doesn't feel/sound so nice, so I did a waxing yesterday with ptfe (10:1) ratio, it seems to ride slightly faster, but might be imagining it. I'll be happy if I get 100 miles between rewaxes. Found it harder to connect the quicklink though, but got it in the end.
