I remember the first time as a kid; another kid bullied me and I ran to my mom. My mom told me"never run from a bully, go back and stand up for yourself" from that day, no one has been successful in bullying me. In nursing school two students tried to bully me in a group. I said to them" are you trying to bully me, I can tell you that it is not going to work". They never repeated the behavior again. My mom was right, Stand up to bullies, and never run from them.

OK, Jane, I must tell you about the first time I was bullied. (Maybe you and I have the same mother.) This kid--Stewart--was a rather large-framed boy, whereas I have always been relatively thin--unless I am working out of course! But that's another topic. Anyway, I was pretty light for my age, and Stewart sat right behind me in class. He decided that he would shove my desk further and further until it was jammed against the teacher's desk. He did this for several days in a row and I found it irritating, but he was a pretty big kid--so he could EASILY do this. It wasn't killing me but it was ticking me off. I was in about third grade. So I mentioned Stewart to my mother and she gave me advice that helped me form my view of bullies, and how to handle them. Basically, in the language I use today, she told me to spotlight his behavior--and spotlight him. This is what she told me to do. "Dan, tomorrow when Stewart starts to push your desk to the front of the room, get out of your desk, turn around to the class and say 'everybody look at Stewart. Please. Everybody look at Stewart. Stewart needs attention, so let's all look at him and give him that attention.'" So I did that. Stewart was embarrassed, and I can't remember whether he cried. I hope he didn't. But this I know. Stewart never ever pushed my desk to the front--into the teacher's desk--again. My mother was not a mean person. But she knew how to handle a bully and was instrumental in teaching me to handle them as well. Yes, you stand up to them. You don't "give as good as you get." That is childish, negative behavior. You do precisely what your mother and mine taught us. You SPOTLIGHT WHAT THEY ARE DOING. You stand up to them but never go down to their level. Most bullies, when they are spotlighted, are embarrassed, and knock off the behavior. We have good mothers Jane Doe--and both of us should be eternally grateful. I know that I am.

Thank you so much for this channel. Im struggling to deal with a narcissistic, condescending, and insulting trainer at work. I just tried your process "that may be but" in my head, and I could feel the tension change in the room. I said "that may be but you will not speak to me in that way". And I felt my confidence rise, and the fear of him insulting me again faded away. And the fear that we have, invites in more trouble. Sometimes we fall susceptible to the fear, and we just need an ally or affirming mentor to inspire our self esteem again.

I’m one of these people that have a hard time saying no to people. One day I walked into the grocery store and there was a lady there trying to get people to sign up for a newspaper subscriptions. She was giving out free $5 gift cards to people that signed up. The first thing she did was hand me the gift card then explained what she was selling. She put the gift card in my hand to force me to stand there and talk to her. I politely told her no thank you and attempted to give her back the gift card. She wouldn’t take the card back and continue to push me to purchase a newspaper paper subscription. By the time I told her no the third time I was about to lose my shit. She final accepted it and took the gift card. I was so proud of my self and I didn’t even give a shit that I hurt her feelings when I said no the third time. I was as equally as rude to her as she was being to me.

Brilliant. Thank you Dan. And thank you for the "manager of negative employees"-answer! I work in such a company and often find myself negative myself. It is a real struggle to stay positive and the people who seem to manage it the best seem to be those who don't care about the company nor the job themselves.. I also experienced that the place the rot starts is at the top - and in addition "the top" has the audacity to stand in front of and telling us that all our problems will go away if we just start talking positively about the sinking ship. To stay positive in that place is like staying dry in a submerged boat.

I hear you. Sometimes, if you can't change the situation you really do have to change how you view the situation and that starts with NEVER letting such an environment transform YOU. Be aware of the principle of transformation and keep reminding yourself who you ARE. You can remain kind, loving, compassionate AND productive, even if all around you are losing their sense of who they are--and blaming it on YOU. (See the poem "IF" by Rudyard Kipling; my mother would recite that to me when I was a little boy. It is a wonderful reminder of what it is to be a man--or woman--or person!)

EDIT: Dan, I think you missed your calling as a comedian!!! There are too many hilarious moments in this video to list them all 😂😂😂 I love what you do though & you are amazing at it 💞 Ty for helping me find a confident voice again. Now my tact...well, that's another story 🙈 In the realtor example, I'd likely respond with "that may be but...I've decided to list it for $310,000. I understand if you aren't comfortable with that price so please let me know if I need to find another realtor who will be" Sometimes I feel as if I get stuck on one end of the communication spectrum or the other: I'm either insecure & quiet or overly outspoken & stick my foot in my mouth 🤷
@TheWizardOfWords
5 жыл бұрын
Birdie, there would be nothing wrong with that tag line. However, for the most part, I would stick with the broken record. The idea is that you want no argument. For example, your comment might be received with "Well it's not about my being comfortable, it's about the market value of your home," and you might find yourself sidetracked. However, if you leave it with "That may be but I have decided to list my home for $310,000" the Realtor either produces the paperwork or you can show him/her the door. BTW, the best sidetrackers in the world are teenagers. Sometimes your ONLY defense against teen argumentation is the broken record. Otherwise they'll just present different arguments until your head explodes. :) And we don't want that. One last thing Birdie--you'll find plenty of videos on speaking with tact and finesse--right on my channel. Feel free!

How do you get an answer from someone who keeps evading a question?
@danastoian6350
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessie, I read your question and found it interesting. You can ask directly that person, one, two times, but if you see that it still doesn't provide you with an answer, you leave and let that person know that you're out of this game. Daniel has the answer matching your question in one of his videos about "the silent treatment". What to do when someone gives you the silent treatment. The thing is, you can control your reaction but you can't control that person's decision to respond or not. If he/she doesn't, you have to leave right away the game because that person is not there. If someone doesn't offer you the respect you want to be treated with, leave right away and offer yourself that dignity. Completely been in that situation. Hope it helps, Love.

Dan, you're an extraordinary communicator. I have learnt so much from your videos and integrated the knowledge in my communication. I have a question because you usually refer to dialogues between respectful and well mannered people. How do you apply the communication techniques with extremely disrespectful people, with manipulators and narcissists? Because once you show you own your words and asume your position, they will switch from a manipulation strategy to another. How do you stand your ground in this game without walking away, by remaining assertive and calm. And still, by not having to justify yourself. You can stand your ground in one conversation but after 5 minutes, they find another way to abuse you. How do you stay calm when you have to stand your ground every 5 minutes? I am curious how you would approach this subject and am looking forward to hear. Thank you.

@@TheWizardOfWords Here's a specific example: Setting: Thanksgiving with my 2 adult brothers, my husband, all of our adult kids, who enjoy each other, and our 86 year old widowed mother who hosted all 12 of us at a VRBO on the beach for the week. She insisted on having a "relaxed" holiday, said we could order Chinese takeout for Thanksgiving Day,, she just wanted to play with her new great-grandchild. Then, she invited her 2 siblings and their families for the day, bringing the total to 25. Still insisting takeout will be "fine." From a lifetime of experience, my younger brother brother and I knew she would become an anxious, hostile shrew on the day before the big get-together, and she did not disappoint. His crew and I were in the kitchen, socializing and prepping the traditional meal we had planned despite Mom and against the express demands of our older brother ("Don't stress Mom out") For the record, there were no reataurant options at all, takeout or otherwise, in this location. Mom enters, with a notebook in which she has begun to try to plan the meal. She selects me, as usual, as her target. Me: (relating a story about how my daughter finagled a ride to the airport from her boyfriend to fly out to meet us for the holiday) Mom: Well, I don't think that's funny at all. "Trixie" is the kind of person people like me are always having to pick up after. (picks up coffee pot, turns around, eyes the takeaway coffee I bought at the grocery store that morning) Mom: "Susie", do you want some coffee? Oh, I forgot, you only drink specialty coffee. Me: (trying to ignore the jabs, I describe the woman who sold me the coffee, and how my husband and I commented on her beautiful accent and asked her what part of Europe she lived in originally, what brought her to the U.S., etc.) Mom: (interrupting) Well, that's just very rude! It's so rude to make someone tell you where they're from if they don't want to. . . Me: shut down, finish my task in silence as others divert her, and leave the room What do you do with that? My husband and I and our daughter are not perfect, but we aren't rude and I'm not a coffee snob. She did this to me in front of my nieces and nephew, my brother and sister-in-law. She never treats them or my other brother like this; just me, and she does things like this all the time, alternately with telling me how wonderful I am, which I can hardly tolerate any more because it seems so fake. I'm sick of it, but I'm also the only one who lives close to her, so it's not like I can just ignore her. Dementia is NOT an issue; she knows what she's doing when she does it, then says (in private), "Sorry if I made you mad" and expects me to act as if she didn't do it, and I usually do.

Hey Mr. O'Connor: Much respect unto you and great advice overall, but I must point out at 22:30 in the video, I think that the Platinum Rule has a fatal flaw. The flaw is this: it is not always possible to give something to someone just because they want it, they expect it, or they demand it. It is not always possible to treat another person the way they merely want to be treated. We can always be cordial and moral towards someone, but we cannot always fulfill their personal expectations or their petty wishes. * Great advice otherwise, Mr. O'Connor, thanks for your videos. No disrespect meant towards you or this video.
@TheWizardOfWords
3 жыл бұрын
D. nothing you said was disrespectful. It's certainly OK to see things differently and that's what you and I are doing. The Platinum Rule is not designed to be an instrument for fulfilling the fantasies of the other person. It is designed to point out that different people want to be treated differently, and we shouldn't be using just ourselves as the measure of how others should be treated. For example, if someone prefers silence when they work, but you prefer to visit--give them silence. If someone wishes not to have children, and you love children, don't force your wishes and expectations on them. Again, this rule doesn't dictate that we give people everything they want. It is a rule about how you TREAT other people. There is a big difference. TREAT people in the manner they wish to be treated. As far as giving them what they want or expect--that is altogether different. If a friend wants sex, do you think I am saying you should give him sex? No, I am saying if he is an introvert; treat him that way and respect his privacy. If he is an extrovert, treat him as such. You don't have to "GIVE" others anything except kindness :)

If you are the positive person coming in always ohmygod just loving the morning and ready to go to work and all you see is negative Miss around you that's one thing I would not stand for I make a point to make sure I get everyone to be just as happy even the graveyard shift to let them know get that they not alone in this weird now and I'm here that yeah it's just the negativeness from them and tries to overcome but however I defeat that and let them know nothing but love resides in this convenience store

Normally when someone insults u on others, I kind of learned from u and others not to dwell on it in front of others, especially by saying "this hurt my feelings or sth". But if I say "are u trying to embarase me..." isn't that again implying feelings and kind of implying that the other has the power of doing that to me?

"Are you trying to embarrass me?" is simply spot-lighting behavior. You are not saying you are embarrassed; you are acknowledging someone's attempt and forcing them to acknowledge it too.

Why is Andrew in this video eating? It just seems odd! I found it very distracting from the content of what you were trying to say. I couldn’t focus at all on your content without just listening to the audio. It just seems that he was put on there for his appearance and it was a little uncomfortable for me to be honest. He wasn’t even paying attention really. I think if he’s going to participate on a channel that you care a lot about, that he should dress up a little and not be eating and looking uninterested. He looks like he’s in boxer shorts!??? And then it looks like Olga is coming in and clearing his plates for him!!!? I really enjoy your channel otherwise! And thank you for taking about transference! I love this so much!! This was brilliant!! I am either going to transform or conform. I love this! I also absolutely love how you say to stick to one point of what you are saying. I have had some people try to manipulate me in my life, and I think sticking to the one sentence is perfect. For example, I have been talking to a man overseas for awhile now. We have become very good friends but he disappears sometimes and then comes back and love bombs me. And I always used to fall for it! I just think that the line, “I’m sorry but the distance is too much for me” is perfect. And just keep repeating it. Over and over. And then just stop talking. Because I really can’t develop trust in someone whom I can’t see! And I don’t want to get love-bombed into keep talking! (I know this is a little embarrassing of a situation for me to share, but I just wanted to share it with you and thank you because I think that sentence will really help me.). Thank you!

GG, Andrew was apprenticing and doing a little computer work for me. He's back in university now--where he belongs. His clothes reflect a teenager in Mexico, which is what he is and where we both are :). Having dispatched that--I'm happy this video was useful for you and feel free to share it!
