I don't think it's completely appropriate to apply a blanket statement here. If you threw a dart at a map of the US and opened an account with the bank/credit union with the nearest branch, you'd probably be better off by taking the credit union approach. But shitty credit unions do exist, and there are plenty of them. Some of them really don't do much better than the big banks on fees or the interest rates- and, more commonly, the overall experience is worse (i.e. poor app/website, lacking customer service, relatively inconvenient, etc.). Point being to do your research and determine which institution fits your needs the best.

I have US bank, never used any other bank, I open my account at 19. I get waive the monthly fee since I have direct deposit. I never do late payments on my credit cards ever, because why would I not be on top of my financials? I have a cash back credit card that pays me $30-40 a month, use it instead of my debit card, every paycheck I just pay the card and pay 0% interest on my purchases. Its also free no annual fees, so I get $350-$450 a year back, free money. I don’t use my bank to save money or for my retirement, for that I have a 401k account and I invest in the stock market that gets me a return of 12% minimum yearly, I don’t care about those 0.01 and 0.15% that banks offers, those are a joke. My bank is just an instrument to move my money, from my paycheck money to my account, from my account to lay my cash back credit card, from my account to my stocks and to pay my bills with autopay.

I personally have a secondary checking account with Chase where I keep $1500-$2000. The primary idea behind establishing it was to have a bit of liquid cash, somewhere, that I can get to easily in the very unlikely event that something happens to my main checking account at Alliant Credit Union (any added benefits are a bonus). I chose Chase because I received a significant signup bonus, it gives me access to a very large network of ATMs where I can also make cash deposits, I had an established and mutually good relationship with them, and the BS fees are something I can avoid easily.

What's worse with Chase is if you have 5 transactions go through in a day, and you made a mistake and couldn't cover them all, they will run the largest through first so they get to charge overdrafts for the smaller ones. Even if the large one shows up last that day.

I have accounts at both USAA and NFCU. In a nutshell, NFCU has better account rates for everything (checking, savings, money market, CDs, credit cards) while USAA has better fee policies, online banking, and check deposits. Loans are about the same rates between both institutions. I recommend banking at both if you can. USAA is where my direct deposits go (due to easy banking functions) and NFCU is where I keep my cash holdings and emergency fund (due to the higher APYs).

Thanks so much for reading all the fine print for us! I make sure to read interest rates and fees before I choose a bank because they make money from our forgetfulness. Unfortunately a lot of us fall into this trap because these banks offer $500-$600 bonus when you open an account.
@CamdenBloke
3 жыл бұрын
This is so weird. When I first started banking (in the 90s, I was born in 1980) all checking accounts were 'free' and all had a $0.00 minimum. The checking account is a freebie the bank gives you to get you to also open a savings account, which charges no fees but instead pays a low interest rate. The only fee is that you have to pay to have your checks printed, but you can order custom checks (with a picture of Garfield or a bible quote or whatever) from one of those ads if you want instead. The first time I saw an ad for 'totally free checking,' I was like, 'Doi! All checking is free. That's not a bonus.' My credit union still follows that model, with the slight variation being that you have to open a savings account to get your free checking account.

Speaking of the Chase credit cards... Well... First off - BEWARE! Especially if you are a small business owner. Do not under any circumstances put all your funds into a Chase account! Second - do not rely on their credit cards only (or their words, for that matter!). Get other credit cards too. Even though Chase Ultimate Rewards program can look very attractive to you. You'll ask - why? The answer is simple - because of the Chase internal system. There are people who you are meeting with when you are opening your account/credit cards... And there are people who actually make decisions about your account. Literally. Two groups of people. Not connected. At least, that's what the first people say when your account is closed and all your credit cards blocked all of a sudden. My story with Chase was simple and sad: in March 2016 we opened Chase business premium checking account. Before that I had their credit cards (Sapphire Preferred and Ink Plus) for about a year and was pretty happy with them. So, after meeting with their staff and spending a couple of hours in explaining what we do as a business, I got the account up and running. They even assigned an 'account manager' to my business. I'll tell you about his 'management' further. In November 2016 they offered us yet another credit card - Ink Business Preferred. After 1.5 hour meeting with their local Customer Relations Vice President, and talking about our business in details, which went well, they approved us for this card as well. Up until May 2017 we were running our business with Chase as usual, doing our regular things. If they had questions they would call me. Nothing unusual from us, or from them. In May I was on a business trip in Europe. Of course, relying on their credit cards a lot because those were our main credit cards for trips. Before the trip I notified Chase about it. But, in the middle of the trip somewhere in rural Italy all my cards stopped working. Right when I was trying to pay with them after an hour long trip by cab. When I tried to call Chase and find out what was going on, the only thing they said was that they cannot help me anymore and all my accounts are closed. That, for a second, three credit cards (total credit limit for $100K), and a checking account with $300K on it. NO EXPLANATION! Nothing at all! Of course, I tried to call our Chase business manager. No response. I left a message and emailed him, just in case. No response. After second call and a voicemail I got an email from him that it was not his decision, he doesn't know what happened and cannot help me anymore. That is pretty much it. I was really shocked by this attitude. Chase knew that I was in another country and cut me off like this from all my credit cards. Their manager that was assigned to us (his name is Michael Tarascio) had never been very helpful. My guess is that he was either extremely busy and just didn't have time for us or his managerial skills were not that great, in the first place. A few times when I had some routine questions I had to email or call him several times reminding about my questions. One time though he called me! It was a call from his cell phone "off the record" and he asked if I could wire $100K more to our business account because "Chase is going to review his work and It would be nice if our account would show that he'd done a good job with us". Of course, I wired additional funds to our account. Didn't help much in the long run, huh? They were trying to take all our business banking but we preferred to keep our main funds at another bank. And, oh, boy, I'm glad we did! By the way, for the record (and those who'd say - "No way, you should have done something wrong!") - US Citizen, My business was 7 years old, Excellent Credit Score, No debt, No bad credits, Great relationships with other banks, seven figures' annual revenue. So, I WOULD NOT recommend working with Chase and have their credit cards. Google something like "Chase closed my business account" and you will be very surprised how many similar stories you will find.
