After I saw your June TBR, I was really intrigued to see what your thoughts on this book would be! I have to say, hearing the premise has me interested in reading it, partially because I love sharks but also because it sounds so bizarre. 😅 I only watched the spoiler free part of your review, but I appreciated hearing your thoughts. I'll definitely temper my expectations before reading this book. I typically don't read books with heavy romance. How intense would you say it is in this book? I generally don't like reading books with any graphic sex scenes or anything like that.
@beautifulminutiae

Oh, it’s so bizarre! That’s why I wanted to read it too 😜 It didn’t disappoint on that front. I think it would’ve worked better as sci fi, where she delved more into why it was happening. Then the weird details would’ve fit better and she still could’ve explored the themes she was trying to express. I wouldn’t say this is a romance heavy book, honestly. There weren’t any explicit scenes. Anything that happened was closed door. Hope that helps 😊

Thank you for reading this so I don't have to 🤪 Religious representation that is contrary to the vast majority of adherants to that religion also bothers me a lot...but I can't lie, the premise of the book is intriguing 😂 Still only halfway through your vlog, so I will have to finish it tomorrow.
@beautifulminutiae

I didn’t like the religious misrepresentation either, but it’s something that feels sooooo common in a lot of contemporary literary fiction. I think this book could’ve been good, despite the odd premise, but it would’ve worked better as a full fledged sci fi (or a horror, like someone else in the comments mentioned).

This book sounds like a wild ride. lol! This reminds me of trying to read Riley Sager this past week. His writing is just not good. It’s shocking to me. The ending of his book was the best part. I think I have realized just how much reading classics all the time has changed my perspective on writing in a good way.

It’s interesting, isn’t it? I definitely think there are some modern authors who write beautifully, but sometimes modern prose can feel a bit jarring when you’re used to classic lit. But those are works that have stood the test of time (unlike new releases), so it’s probably unfair to compare them 😂

From your descriptions, it almost sounds like this book is meant to be a look at different physical or even mental diseases, but doing so through a slightly different lens. However, it also sounds like it goes too in depth on the specifics of the animal transformations to really be focusing on, and truly be about, the effects the diseases have on the people diagnosed with them and on those around them. For example, with the pregnant woman my thought was, maybe the babies were diagnosed with Down syndrome (you know, birds, feathers, down? It made sense to me anyway), but then the whole bursting out of her uterus and she might not survive kind of ruined that idea.
@beautifulminutiae

Oh, yes, that’s definitely something the author is trying to explore, along with grief, love and community. She definitely got bogged down in the details (she should’ve either made it more vague or gone a sci-fi/horror direction). But even aside from the details, she didn’t go deep into people’s emotions. She told us how people were feeling more than showing it, so it made it hard to invest in anyone’s story. That’s part of what made it feel like she was trying to make it feel deep without any true depth.

I read this last year and just wasn't a fan. I DNF'd it like 50-60% in. I just didn't care about any characters in the book and feel like as a "love story" it fell incredibly flat for me. For such a unique premise, I felt like the most interesting part (which for me was people getting turned into animals) was kind of glossed over. I wanted a history of when it started and just MORE about the experiences. Maybe I would have gotten more of what I wanted if I had finished it (?), but it lost my interest waaaay before I DNF'd it 😂 Maybe it would have been better as a horror book 😂
@beautifulminutiae

Something I ended up cutting out of my review (because it was too long 😂) is that we get a lot of text telling us how much Lewis and Wren love each other, but I didn’t really feel/see it all that much. That definitely made the love story part feel a lot less emotional. This would’ve made a great horror book, especially since there’s definitely some body horror already there. It would’ve made a good sci fi as well, but it leaned too hard into the literary fiction genre.
