Very insightful and great info! I’m getting my masters in school psychology but I graduated with a bachelors in mass communications. I hope to eventually obtain my doctoral degree in the field as well.

Hi @allthesespecialties I have been following you for awhile. Always good info. I have a few questions. I am a lssp and have been attempting to obtain my lpc based on the board statement of being in a "related field" however, school psychs don't typically gain much counseling experience in school programs, definitely more assessment in nature. However, counseling board docs require "counseling hours" for which supervisors must sign off on. I struggle with the ethical part of this request. Is there a way to obtain that counseling experience post conferred degree without returning to school? Also, curious if your'e in an online doctorate program or if you could recommend any good ones? I've considered going for the LP after completion of a PhD school psychology or Psyd clinical psychology program. Lookn forward to your reply.

Hi Rhon369. Thank you for tuning in to my videos. I appreciate it and thank you for leaving a comment. If you would like to get your LPC, I believe you may be able to get into a counseling certificate program that may allow you to get you required program hours. Typically it is about 700 hours (100 practicum) (600 internship) hours. This program -degree.lamar.edu/programs/certificate-mental-health-counseling/ is 18 hours but does not have the practicum and internship hours as a part of the program. However, you may be able to see if you'd be able to enroll in those hours just so you'd be able to meet state requirements. The program I am in now is not online, but I did have some online courses. I think with the pandemic, many school may still be offering more online coursework for doctoral students. Please let me know what other questions you may have. I'm happy to help.

@allthesespecialties i seriously appreciate this post!! very informative - may I ask how you found your counseling experience? I have a BA in sociology just as you and I am currently in a masters program for ed. psych however I found out my degree plan doesn't include any intership or practice. I was told it isn't required, do you know how I can find some type of experience?

Hi Jasmine. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. I really appreciate it. It seems that your program is specialized for those that want to be researchers. How many hours is your masters program? What you may do is finish this program or apply to a different program that has a school psychology focus. This can be a masters, specialist or doctorate program. Some of your credits from your current program may even transfer. How long have you been in your current program?

@@Joelschoolpsy No problem, it's hard finding people to converse with about this so I'm extremely grateful and 2 1/2 years! I'm almost done, it's a 3 year program. It just dawned on me - the same as you that it may be for researchers. I'm ready to be hands on ya know?

@@jasminearthur8048 Hey Jasmine. I totally understand. The good thing is, if you apply to a PhD program you'll already have some research experience, which PhD programs like. I'm not sure if you've taken any quantitative or qualitative stats courses in your program or any sort of research methods courses, but that'd be good if you have. I think you'd be able to make the argument that you'd like to combine research and practice and that is why you are pursuing the doctoral degree. If you are not interested in the doctoral degree you could definitely do a specialist program.

Hi Jordan. Good question. Since you are getting your bachelor's in psych you wouldn't need to get a degree in education. Your bachelor's in psych should provide you with the psych prerequisites you would need. Are you planning on applying to a masters program or a doctoral program?

If I get a masters in psychology will I be able to practice counseling independently? Hopefully private practice
@Joelschoolpsy

Hi. If you get a masters in psychology and the coursework matches with state licensing requirements, you could possibly be a professional counselor. Your program would probably need to have practicum and internship experiences built in as well so that you could also meet the state requirements for that as well. After you get your intern license. You could then begin working on your hours for full licensure, so you can work in private practice. Some people also become psychological associates. I am not sure if they can work in private practice, however, I don't know as much about that profession. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

And I'm a school counselor in South Korea! Since my first semester of master's degree(Education) starts next month, I would like to know if I should take off a semester from school this year and try to get a master's degree of Psychology. I have a bachelor of psychology though.

@@user-mu7gc6gz9e hi Joy, thank you for watching and commenting.. I appreciate it. That is good you have a foundation in psychology already and so a masters in education or psychology could help you get into a PhD program. In the US many people complete their bachelors and then apply to a psychology PhD program. There are some programs that accept you with just a bachelors and you earn a masters on the way. Are you leaning towards one specialty in psychology over the others? In School Psychology...it combines education and psychology so either masters degree can help. Also your experience as a school counselor will help as well. Are you looking to continue your education in South Korea or are you looking for some programs abroad.

@@Joelschoolpsy OMG thank you so much for the helpful informations! I'm so glad to hear that master's degree of education is okay. Since a lof of my colleagues recommanded me to apply for 'psychology', not 'education', I was so stressed out thinking that I might made bad decision for my career. Thank you again! My master courses starts next month in South Korea(Ewha womans univ.). I'm planning to apply for ph.D of school psychology or school counseling after I finish master's degree courses. In South Korea, people usually apply for ph.D. abroad after finish master, and if get admission, we have to do master's degree AGAIN in USA. So basically I'm gonna do master's degree twice.(first master in Korea, and second master in USA) I would like to do master's degree abroad, but it costs too much.(ph.D. can get funding) Thank you, and hope you stay safe!

@@user-mu7gc6gz9e Thank you, Joy and I wish you well in your education. I hope you will be able to finish your masters and apply to PhD programs that you want. Phd programs take many things into consideration. I have a masters in human services and on in counseling and I was still able to get into a PhD program in Educational psychology with a focus in school psychology. I was rejected the first time since human services is not directly related psychology however since counseling is, I got accepted after I completed the counseling degree. Education heavily influences the field of school psychology so it is a really good choice, especially since you have a psychology bachelors. Please keep me updated on your studies.
