This is another article in a long series of articles describing the healing stories of patients who undergo upper cervical care. In this case, Amy found our office through a Facebook add on vertigo. Amy had suffered from transient vertigo, was on high blood pressure medication and suffered from neck problems. Like most people in this country when faced with a chronic health issue the mantra in this country is to see your doctor. Doctors are great at naming conditions but when it comes to uncovering a cause and removing it the lights turn off. Instead of asking for causes they typically prescribe medications that treat symptoms. Looking for causes and removing them isn't in the playbook and as a consequence many people today are looking into alternative health care for healing solutions.
Like many patients who undergo care in our office, they often come for one health problem and after getting under care find that other health issues that they are not expecting to change do. In Amy's case, she sought care for vertigo and after a few months noticed that her blood pressure dropped significantly. Her neck pain resolved and transient vertigo she had also improved markedly. How can an upper cervical correction allow the body to accomplish these things? Next, we will discuss the upper cervical spine, the brainstem, and how neck injuries can lead to a plethora of different health problems.
What Does the Neck have to Do with High Blood Pressure and Vertigo?
The top two bones in the neck, the atlas, and axis, house the most vital area of your body, the brainstem. This structure is the seat of control for most functions in the body that you do not consciously control, including blood pressure and balance.
In 2007 a landmark study was published in human hypertension showing that correction of the atlas vertebrae lowers blood pressure on average by 18mmhg. (1) This was the first blind study done by medical doctors regarding upper cervical correction and its effects on blood pressure. As we will explain shortly upper cervical care is NOT a treatment but rather it's goal is to remove structural misalignments resulting from injury to allow the central nervous system to function better.
Vertigo is a condition based on countrywide statistics that affects over 400,000 people in the Los Angeles area alone (2). The vestibular nucleus coordinates neurological input from the eyes, inner ear, and neck joints and is responsible for the balance. Spinal misalignment in the upper cervical spine can impact the coordination of balance and often underlying a patient's chronic vertigo problems. (3)
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) are used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint.
Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern. Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling.
The patient is then monitored overtime to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed.
However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”. It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process. This is how Blair Chiropractic treatment can often affect vertigo and aid your body in healing itself.
