In this article, we will talk about a patient named Anne, who suffered from occasional vertigo. As she describes in the embedded video, one night she was turning over in bed and twisted her neck. Immediately afterward she had severe unremitting vertigo, nausea, and could not even walk. As a consequence, Anne immediately went to urgent care because she was scared that she had a stroke or brain tumor.
The doctor at urgent care cleared her of a brain tumor or stroke and sent her home with the advice of laying over a hard table with her head hanging off. Anne did find some relief from this exercise but still suffered chronic vertigo and was looking for a solution. Anne didn't know what to do. As a consequence, Anne turned to KZitem, since she was told there was nothing really that could be done. She searched the term "healing vertigo naturally" on KZitem. One video that populated in the search query was a testimony of a patient who suffered from severe vertigo and recovered by going to an upper cervical chiropractor. The second video she came across was a video of Dr. Patrick Kerr from New York where Montel Williams was explaining the benefits that he received from upper cervical care. Anne called up Dr. Kerr's office and they referred her to our LOS Angeles office.
As with all new patients, we ran Anne through a battery of tests, took several precision upper cervical Xrays and made a correction on her atlas vertebrae. Thankfully, Anne made a rapid recovery in our office and it changed her entire life. Anne now comes to the office for maintenance checks to ensure that she is in alignment and functioning at her best.
How does the Neck Relate to Vertigo?
The cervical spine joints have mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors that provide input from the neck joints into the vestibular nucleus in the brainstem. The vestibular nucleus plays a coordinating effort for sensory input that comes from the eyes, inner ear, and joints of the neck. Most people who suffer from vertigo will acknowledge that their vertigo gets worse with certain head positions and movements. We will explain more about this later.
Head and Neck Trauma - Vertigo
"The precise incidence of cervical vertigo is controversial but it is estimated that 20-58% of patients who sustain closed-head injuries or whiplash experience late-onset symptoms of dizziness, vertigo and Disequilibrium. In this regard, also note that driving disturbances are common in persons with chronic whiplash-associated vertigo (WAD), occurring in 73% according to Takasaki (Takasaki, Johnston, et al. 2011). Cervical vertigo is a matter of considerable concern because of the high litigation-related costs of whiplash injuries. Cervical vertigo from other causes is much less common."(1)
Life is full of trauma. The anatomical relationship of the neck and head makes it susceptible to injury. The head-on average weighs 10-12 pounds and the top vertebrae in the neck weighs 2 ounces. The head-neck junction is held together by ligaments, muscles, and soft tissue. Whiplash, concussions, slip and falls, and other traumas are precursor events for many who suffer from chronic vertigo.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored overtime to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process. This is how Blair Chiropractic treatment can often affect vertigo and aid your body in healing itself.
