We are all told from a young age to pick a career and that we can be anything we want to be, but what is that really? How are you supposed to pick something that will define the rest of your life when you're in your 20's? And let's say you choose an occupation but that occupation doesn't provide the living you desire for you and your family? In an environment of inflation and excessive prices, this is a whimsy we are really not at liberty to pursue anymore. We all have to pick an occupation to make money in order to provide for ourselves. It is one of the most important decisions you will ever make, and you're supposed to make that choice without ever having performed the job to begin with.
This has lead me to make a series of jumps from different career choices from art to machining to engineering. I have always had the desire to be creative and the difficulties of making money with creativity are relentless. Typically creative people have to pursue these desires on the side or simply as a hobby just to somewhat find completion in their lives. What happens if you get to be paid for creativity? Would it still be fun? Would it be fulfilling to make money doing what you love?
These are the questions I've still asking, but I think I've arrived at some answers.
NOTE:
I obtained some footage from @tested to quote Adam Savage's thoughts on the matter. He typically has some great viewpoints on being a maker and a human being in general. I would also highly recommend one of his videos about what it takes to work as a special effects person. He confirmed some of my suspicions about having to do the work to get to the fun stuff even in a position of glory.
