@@Air00 - People of color is supposed to be a more politically correct term. The term "colored people" used to be accepted bc the term "black" was once seen as derogatory, but eventually people started using "colored folk" in the derogatory sense, just like the words "b!tch", "f@gg0t", "tr@nsvest!te", etc. became derogatory. So POC was replaced as an alternative. POC refers to black & brown people together. BIPOC refers to all the minorities (black, indigenous, asian, latino, middle eastern, etc). Ethnic makes no sense since technically everybody has some kind of ethnicity even if they don't know it. Even the word "minority" can be problematic sometimes since just bc a group is a minority in America, that doesn't mean they're minorities in other countries, including their own homeland. Like you can't call a Latino a minority, if they're living in Brasil where they exist as a majority group. BIPOC is meant to prevent those kinds of mistakes, especially if you're talking about all the non-white groups of people. Anywayyyyy, this is all just arguing semantics & is irrelevant to the video. The point is that since the conversation was about Janet, a *black woman,* Justin should've just flat out said "black people" -- or if that makes him uncomfortable, then he could've said "African Americans". His hesitancy reflects the fear many white people have of admitting the systemic discrimination against black people directly. Sure, "ethnic" (BIPOC) have it hard in America, but this was such an obvious deflection on his part. Janet didn't get mistreated as an "ethnic person", she got mistreated as a *black woman.* This isn't the first time that white people have a hard time vocalizing the black struggle. #SAYTHEIRNAMES

The misogynoir and ageism really jumped out with this situation. The "young, unassuming white boy tempted by the washed up, older black woman" narrative is very tired. The media treated Janet so poorly after the performance. There's a clip of her and Tyler Perry doing a press interview for "Why Did i Get Married?" and the news anchors were so unprofessional and rude, not even asking about her role just snickering and making little back-handed comments. Then Justin Timberlake is over here "apologizing" almost 20 years after the fact. Sir, we know the only reason why you are even addressing this is because no one was checking for you until the Britney documentary outlined how you also threw her under the bus. For the last 30+ years it has been American media policy to cut away as soon as a streaker makes an appearance on the field during a sporting event. There was a bunch of streaking during the 70s-80s and they felt that broadcasting the chase glamorized it and led to more incidents happening. Plus the pearl clutchers were permanently scarred by the sight of some fugly naked ass running around and filed FCC complaints which led to fines for the stations. I remember people talking about it the day after and being like “why would she even put that top on if it’s so flimsy?!” 🙄But like watching it in real time you could tell she had no idea that outfit had a possibility of doing that. I was super young in 2004 but I always remember realizing that the media painted women and women of color completely different from white men. Why was it okay for Justin but not Janet? He was in n - sync wasn't he, and he was really the only person in n-sync that made decent pop music outside of n-sync, same way Beyonce was in destiny's child and was really the only super successful member to release music outside of Destiny's Child, it's the same with any boyband or girl band, same way Cheryl Cole was the only one out of (whatever girl group she was in, I forgot) , same with Nicole Scherzinger with Pussycat Dolls, same with Robbie Williams etc, its just the way it is, usually one member continues to make music whilst the rest likely disappear.. Cry me a River is a pretty good song and it was a good idea (from his management/label) to pair with Timberlake because he was also pretty big around that time and featured him in some songs, same way Beyonce paired with Jay Z on Crazy In Love then he just kinda stuck around, and really once you hit a point in the music world of essentially being a "brand", you can release anything. Beyonce could release an off kilter album like John Lennon did and people would still love and buy it, like all of John Lennon's experimental stuff with Yoko Ono, or like once robbie Williams had Angels Rock DJ, Love Supreme he could release Rude Box .. its just the way it is. So once Justin Timberlake had cry me a river and his other big songs, he hit that point and stuck, like Rihanna did with Rude Boy and Umbrella, same principle 🤔

I grew up in "The Industry" and spent my childhood and teens years among entertainment types. When "The Incident" happened, I assumed that it was purposeful and premeditated by both sides, knowing what lengths people will go to in order to make a splash. And frankly, it didn't bother me. I mean, Geez-Louise, it was just a boob, and barely a glimpse of it. What did surprise me was how quickly the condemnation came. I knew the reaction was anti-woman, but I hadn't really considered the racial aspect, assuming that if it had been Jessica Simpson the reaction would have been the same. So thank you for giving me a new angle to ponder on.

One interesting aside to the history of the Super Bowl Halftime Show is that the promoters only stopped using boring acts , like marching bands, only after the early nineties when the then up and coming network, Fox aired a special episode of In Living Color , to compete with said halftime show. Many viewers did not return to watch the second half of the game. It was only after that year that having big name acts during halftime became the spectacle that it is today. Oh noooo! A black show upstaging the mighty, expensive Super Bowl!!!!
This is similar to when Nicki had a wardrobe mouth-function when her, Ariana, and Jessie J performed bang bang at some award show and ppl accused her doing that for clout and attention. And it’s was “pre-planned,” when it wasn’t.

Ethnic was the word commonly used for minorities before we had the term "BIPOC". This was an old interview, like 2006. Tbh the vernacular used at the time is irrelevant, he should've just said "black people" -- or if that's too uncomfortable for him, he could've said "African Americans". Although he's not wrong technically, since ethnic minorities do have it harder in America, but the context of the interview was Janet -- a black woman. He had no issue bringing up her gender & admitting that women have it harder in this country, yet he couldn't bring himself to admit that black people have it harder. Now why's that? Why do white men have SO much trouble acknowledging the systemic discrimination against black people? Are they afraid that if they vocalize it, then we'll blame them as the white privileged enablers of that system? Hmmm, gee I wonder.

I was just talking to my husband about the w.a.p song and how men were shocked by it. I had my jaw on the floor by how awesome it is and how hilarious some men's reaction. 🤣

I think men like to disregard the song it sampled which is a 2 Live Crew song. The exact group they grew up on and modeled their careers after. Smh. Oh boy.

@@theTruthSeekerishereI'm not a fan of rap so I wouldn't know if it's a good song or not. I just find it funny and daring in their message. I liked the boundary pushing they did with it.

So I wonder why are they should? Isn't that song something they asked about and dreamed about? They created that culture with female objectivisation, so why so confused? The same word they were dining before were said by a woman. (And in my humble opinion this song has nothing to do with feminism, just my opinion. And I'm feminist)

I don’t know if you’ve watched it, but you should definitely do a video on race in The Handmaid’s Tale because I feel like there’s so much to analyze/discuss. They don’t really have a diverse cast or talk about race at all (in the dialogue), but at the same time the plot mirrors the Underground Railroad and they send one of the only black characters to a brothel nicknamed “jezebel”? There’s definitely a lot to look at, whether it’s statements they’re trying to make or problems with the show itself. Also, if you’re reading this, I LOVE your content; it’s genuinely so thought provoking and informative ❤️

I had never heard about this event, as I was in India. But I can see so many parallells of this with the indian society's treatment of women.

I watched the Game live that year at my sister's house but I had to catch the train right after the half-time show. So I watched the entire half-time including that moment and then got a ride to the train station. We were all watching, and the consensus in the household, from that fraction of a second glimpse (multigenerational and only the newborn had no opinion), was that Janet was wearing a pasty under her top and that we hadn't seen anything at all. I believe my sister had TiVo or whatever so we could have rewound, but in that moment, watching on live television, we didn't even think to rewind bc as far as we could tell, NOTHING had HAPPENED. I made it all the way home before I heard any differently. And I now understand, of course, that if we had paused in that moment, and then looked at the low-res footage, we could have seen that she hadn't been expecting that at all and that her pierced nipple had been exposed. I still marvel to this day that she was treated like a criminal for having a body, when what we witnessed was assault (even if it wasn't his intent, his action exposed her)

I hate what Janet went through...and I hate how many facets of black women's lives are met with this kind of white masculine hostility (our hair, clothes, laughs, and livelihoods in general). Please keep these time capsule videos coming! This was wonderful

You are a breath of fresh air!! TL:DR - At age 22 at the time, this event shaped my approach to style and my personal experience with toxic masculinity and the psychological patriarchy and I’m still angry she was treated that way. I remember this event so well. First: The idea that Janet had to do ANYTHING other than be Janet and make music to be popular and successful and insulting enough!! She’s always been fierce and supremely talented so insinuating she needed a controversy to promote herself was the worst part. And then the subsequent character assassination was disgusting. I was 22 at the time and it very much impacted my entire personality and my approach to pleasing anyone to attract a mate or modifying my behavior to keep one!! The idea that certain bodies “should” behave in or look a certain way for the pleasure of anyone is insane!! The fact that if it were Justin’s shirt being torn open no one would have even noticed other than praise!! The hypocrisy and double standards are infuriating!! Since my late teens I have been going out of my way to look ”ugly” (by conventional standards) as a sort of gate keeping technique. I like to be androgynous because I feel comfortable and I like the way I look with shaved hair and extreme aesthetics. If you can’t get passed how I look and treat me like a human then move it along; I’ve got no room for you. Sorry for the novel!! Can you tell I’m still mad about this!?

I was thinking about ( as a suggestion) how the music industry discredit everything that is girly as a guilty pleasure or something not to be taken seriously while earning a lot of money from them. How that mindset change everybody? How that view also changed the music industry?
