It’s wild that you can use “that’s okay” both to confirm and deny something just like in English.

Like “ PerChe” in Italian. It can be used as “Why” by the first person however, if the following person Says “PerChe” in the beginning of the sentence, it stands for “Because!”

I actually find that really annoying, like how did this happen in TWO languages, man? Maybe I'm just way more autistic than I thought but whenever I ask a yes/no question and they tell me "that's okay" I end up just staring at them trying to figure out what they meant like I legitimately don't know what context I'm supposed to be looking for lol

I am always impressed by the flexibility of some words in Japanese. When you hear them used in something more severe then see it used in a more casual conversation it tends to throw you at first. What surprises me the most is that the Kanji for 'Daijoubu' is 3 characters! That's a lot longer than I expected!

When I returned my dishes at a food court, I’d often ask the person at the dish return if “kore wa daijoubu desu ka?” to make sure I didn’t cause any trouble by not knowing how things worked. I think I may have annoyed them more by asking than if I had just dropped it off and walked away though, lol.

You'll laugh at this but one of the first things I learned watching anime was how to say 'shut up' and 'stupid' as well as 'are you ok ?'. I already knew thank you and good morning just from exposure to different media growing up that used Japanese (like Big Bird's 'Follow That Bird', I think that's where he makes the comment 'why are these people all saying they're from Ohio ?'). I love the Japanese language, it is SO beautiful but awfully difficult. I have tried everything but like Hebrew I only know a smattering and not enough to converse properly. The kanji lesson was fascinating. As someone who is intrigued by language origins, you hit all the sweet spots. Thank you !

It’s similar to the Portuguese phrase. When you wanna ask if someone if they are ok you say “tudo bem?” and you can literally respond “tudo bem” or even “tudo bom” bem and bom both mean “ok”. I’ve been learning Portuguese for the last 4 years to converse with my boyfriend family from Brazil. This video easily clicked for me because of the similarity to Portuguese. :3
