The late, great Jimmie Haskell was a renowned composer and arranger, whose award-winning arrangements include "Ode to Billy Joe," "If You Leave Me Now," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." But, in 1957, he was working for Imperial Records when his boss Lou Chudd put him in charge of overseeing the recordings of his new hot artist, Ricky Nelson.
Rick's relationship with Jimmie would last to the end of his life. Just five days before his death, Rick was in the studio with Jimmie, recording his scratch vocals for a cover of Buddy Holly's "True Love Ways." Before it was all over Jimmie and Rick would collaborate on 33 of his 35 Top-40 hits.
In this exclusive interview from 1987, Jimmie recalls meeting Ricky and developing the distinctive sound found on his early recordings. At the end of the interview, he talks about the final, unreleased recording. Unfortunately, the tape cuts off a few minutes before the interview ends.
Apologies, but this is a noisy recording. The interview was recorded over the phone on very old equipment. Attempts to clean up the audio resulted in better, but still noisy results.
