Great episode, as usual! I am a long-time listener from the States and I have a question. Can someone please explain the purpose of the House of Lords, how David Cameron could be appointed to it, and what that appointment means for British politics? I know it's a big deal, but I don't know why. Thank you!
@metalhead2550
9 ай бұрын
House of Lords is a second chamber that scrutinizes any laws proposed by the house of commons (the MPs one). It has both party political appointments, cross-party appointments, and bishops & archbishops. Usually people are appointed either as a result of the dissolution of parliament or a prime minister resigning (recently seen as controversial based on Truss and Johnson appointments). But also they can be appointed as "working peers" which is how I believe Cameron has been appointed which is reserved for people which will be appointed as a minister of the current Government. One of the major reasons it's a big deal for British politics is that Lords aren't allowed in the house of commons but parliament needs to be able to critique the legislation being brought forward by government ministers by asking questions to them in the commons; so they need a new mechanism which conforms with all the previous traditions whilst allowing MPs to keep Cameron accountable.

I think another important point is that people are appointed to the House of Lords for life and are entitled to draw a salary and other benefits. It's seen as a way to funnel unimpeachable influence and money towards your mates and political allies

Imagine if senators were appointed in the same way that supreme court justices are but instead of being limited to 100 senators, the president could pretty much appoint as many as they want (Like that time David Cameron threatened to appoint 600 or so new lord's if the current ones voted against his benefit cuts)

Andy brought up an interesting point with people like Doris who continually seem to fail upwards. Somehow, the corporate world and politics are where you go if you're an absolute bell end (not all) b/c you know you can completely cock up something... and get promoted or rewarded for it. But, if one of us were to do something similar, we'd likely be looked at with utter disdain and fired, not necessarily in that order. It's bizarre an fascinating.

On the Starmer strategy, I think the most important factor is not giving the Mail, Times, Torygraph and the Tory client media generally any amunition that undermines the Labour appeal in marginals across England. Nothing must alarm middle England in a totally target-voter focus-grouped strategy and platform right through until the election. It’s ultra-cautious, incredibly bland, and risks voters not turning out in high enough numbers to deliver a comfortable majority.

Hearing Nish talk about the UK potentially electing lowest-ambition government and that the political bar is so low is depressingly resonant to myself in Australia. Our Labor government was elected in 2022 after 9 years in opposition thanks to the myriad of scandals plaguing the Liberal/National Party (Tories) as well as an extremely small-target policy agenda. A year and a half into the Albanese Government's first term, they've remained completely unambitious on critical issues when ambition is so desperately needed regarding climate change, wealth inequality and the housing/rental markets. Starmer's proposed government and policies sounds extremely similar to that of our own. That being said, both our major parties recorded their lowest ever primary votes last election and we elected a record number of Greens and Independent candidates to our parliament so hopefully the UK can follow the trend!

I wish you guys had kept the hats on during the entirety of the show 😂 Catherine was right, it especially suited Nish mwahah~ Also, I loved Nish going straight from talking about Nicola Sturgeon to Coco losing control of her mince pie and the camera person zooming out so that it went from just Coco being at the edge of the screen to ensure we had a full view of the entire table 🤣 Can we have a mince pie for Coco every show? Though, to be fair, if I'd had my druthers, I'd say mince pie for everyone! A mince pie in the ovens of every Brit! And, with that, I toss my name into the hat of future UK prime ministers! Oh, wait, you guys don't elect your own PMs... well, I will have to find another way. I'm honestly surprised that Braverman wasn't the villain of the year considering how absolutely diabolical she is, she somehow manages to make Rishi Sunak look better by comparison because, as incompetent and infuriating as he is, he's better than Braverman pretty much by default.

American listener here. I thought the Brits generally liked David Cameron. Like, I thought he resigned as PM because he disagreed with Brexit. Sounds like I'm missing something.
@Aranel_Alasse
8 ай бұрын
The Conservative party was more respectable when he was in charge than they are now and our government wasn't a global embarrassment, but that doesn't mean anyone other than tories liked him then. He didn't actually win a majority in 2010 and had to convince the Liberal Democrats to turn their backs on their voters to become PM. He then launched his austerity measures, which caused over 300,000 excess deaths in the UK. Then he called the Brexit referendum and chose to back Remain, which was probably the biggest reason for the Remain campaign failing because by that point everyone hated him and a lot of people would vote against him on anything. Personally, I hold him responsible for Brexit, the terrible PMs that have followed him and the damage they have done to the country. Bringing Cameron back now (aside from clearly being an act of desperation by Sunak) is controversial because he's not an elected MP, so they had to appoint him to the House of Lords (basically like being made Senator for life) which means that our elected representatives can't question him on his policies as Foreign Secretary. Long story short, if they're a tory politician, it's safe to assume most Brits think they're a wanker!
@SJKM
8 ай бұрын
He also apparently put his member in a dead, cooked pig's mouth and is that person to whom the word "cockwomble" purports. He basically caused Brexit by thinking he could slam dunk it and put the right wing of his party back in their box and instead unleashed a pile of anachronistic, protectionist right wing actual idiots upon us to go with the austerity, Brexit, Covid /post -covid shit soup we were in whilst helping to drive inequality, general other-ing, racism, anti-queer and anti- planet policy. So is he less right wing that some of these other Muppets, yes, are they apparently saying "Daddy's home" in number ten - yes, ie he is more statesman-like than the current cabinet, but there is a very low bar.
