I can imagine Karen surrounded by the instruments, singing this at one of those Unplugged sessions.

Beautiful! Both Phil Ramone & Karen Carpenter really knew how to get the most out of a song. R.I.P., Phil & Karen.

Loved listening to this song. Im happy she was able to do her very own solo album away from the "Carpenters" banner. She needed her own outlet...her own identity...and her own vision. It's too bad she never got to see a proper release of her own album and to gauge the reaction of the public to her own efforts. Such a beautiful voice....filled with emotion. Sadly, we'll never know what she could have become on her own. RIP.

I thought that I had heard most of her songs, even the most obscur ones. This is my first time to hear this wonderful mesmerizing tune. Her sound always gives me chills up my spine. She literally resonates with my body and soul.I fell lucky to have been around at her begining. The first time ,almost 40 years ago, I heard her on the radio and feel in love with this unique woman's voice. RIP Karen We all love and miss you every day.
Actually, I think it's her best SOLO. Imagine a session with America, James Taylor, Carole King, Carly Simon and Karen Carpenter!!!

Maybe my favorite song from Karen's solo album. When it was finally released in 1996 I couldn't believe they shelved it in 1980. How much dreck was given the green light then, but this album was considered "unreleaseable"?!? Scuttled is the word I would use.

The album just wasn't commercial, full of dull as dishwater tunes, this one included. Only "My Body Keeps Changin' my Mind" showed any real energy.

I agree with U Rod & perhaps by that point in her life, she'd been thru the ringer! I understand her motive for wanting to do what SHE wanted, rather than what everyone else, including her mother wanted. That's the only takeaway I get from her Solo Album.

@lucaboden yes Richard had a lot to do with how graet the Carpenters sounded and he is a graet piano player and music writer !! But my point is Karen Carpenters voice was that good that she could of made it on her own !! And if you compair make believe its the first time from her solo album i like that version better than when she sang it with Richard

My wandering soul, how it aimlessly dwells Among darkened hills, amidst its unseen spells, And in the distance all that I hear: the summoning of bells. Far above me, the high boughs they are bending, The once hidden moon now slowly ascending And as it sings to the world its sleep song, I sit in its shadow and await my ending.

@mustang1978horse It wasn't released because Richard and The Boys were afraid that if the album became even a moderate hit, then Karen would walk away, leaving Carpenters and A&M behind. She was their meal ticket, and without her, no more Carpenters. As Olivia Newton-John said, "Karen WAS the Carpenters sound." The whole sordid story is covered at great length in Randy Schmidt's excellent and "Richard free" biography of Karen, "Little Girl Blue."

Yeah! Karen was sooo funny! Carol Burnett Show as " Little Miss Millie Meaner", Andy Williams Show banging on a drum and The Carpenters Specials. There is a Home Movie of her walking into a softball game and making a silly face. She always did and still does make me laugh every time I see her say or do something funny. Her interviews were funny as well cause she always had a funny story to tell.Really miss her!

@improvguru,she was extremely gaunt by the late seventies and early eighties so from that point of view an nt what you stated as being Richards point of view above-it wouldn,t have been a good idea for her to have a solo career anyway. Most of the songs that she sang on her own were not as good as her earlier performances because she sounded ill and they were not good songs. The song above was alright.

If you watch the very insightful documentary 'Goodbye to Love', she wanted a solo career to escape from the control Richard & her Mother exerted & to be more current & do disco, etc instead of only doing ballads. As the doc showed, Anorexia is a response to feeling you have no control over your life, so you gain control by controlling your eating. Going solo could have given her control over her own life & led to her finally getting independence & recovery.
