I had the honor and pleasure to work as an office temp for Lerner as he prepared his last show, Dance A Little Closer. He was an incredibly genuine human being. May he Rest in Eternal Peace.

Sad Julie Andrews couldn’t make it, she’s their biggest STAR! Julie was the one who gave Mr Lerner his Oscar much later after this Kennedy Center honors! He called her “ My Fair Lady”

Paint your Wagon was a great film just sadly at the end of a brilliant era.

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe created some of the greatest scores in musical theater and film history, most significantly My Fair Lady { Rex Harrison was touring with a revival of the show when this segment was filmed }; Gigi, and Camelot. Their reputation was somewhat tarnished by the failure of the film of Paint Your Wagon, and the film of The Little Prince, which was to have starred Frank Sinatra, until he withdrew from the project. Great music; what happened to the new Fair Lady film?

MrImiller07 Critics may have panned the film version of Paint Your Wagon, but the people liked it (average 68% positive). It was even popular overseas: the movie had a 79-week run at London's Astoria Theater.

It was going so well and................... poof. At least we got Rex Harrison's stirring tribute, but it would have been really nice to see the whole segment. It's like someone suddenly pulled the plug and the lights went out.

It is a bit draggy but the songs really help to move it along. Great songs like They call the wind Mariah, Wond'ring star, I talk to the trees, gold fever. And towards the end the pace quickens when the young mormon boy is introduced and then it concludes quite nicely Maybe it's just me but I liked all their voices.

Who is singing with Goulet? I know Michelle Lee had a Broadway career & "Knots Landing" was popular then as well so that aspect would have made her popular to the TV viewers.

Liz Robertson.....he tried to push her career in anything he was linked to those last 5 years....probably expressly demanded her appearance here...she was and is a good enough singer , saw her several times in various west end shows, but never quite became the star he had hoped...

I remember seeing Paint Your Wagon during its theatrical release; it was almost unwatchable. Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood may be dynamic action film stars, but they were not musical talents. Logan's direction was inept. Some of Lerner and Loewe's work translated to the screen better than others.

MrImiller07 Yet, the movie is considered a classic, go figure. Personally, I think the roughness of the singing only enhances the roughness of the times and subject. The two songs by Ben (Marvin) actually work best with his non-singer singing. The bulk of the music is chorus driven, so that all works as well. If you just want quality music, go to a concert. The same criticism could be made for Rex Harrison, Wilfrid Hyde-White and Stanley Holloway in My Fair Lady; Richard Harris in the stage version of Camelot, even Maurice Chevalier in Gigi. Yet they all worked. Musical theater and film is far more than elegant singing.

In 1985, she was likely filming one of two projects that came out in '86: the movie adaptation of "That's Life" with Jack Lemmon or the movie "Duet for One", both of which earned her Golden Globe Best Actress nominations.
