Haha, yeah, usually there's some kind of moral to these older folk tales, even if it's a bit different from what I'm used to in modern literature. (Spoilers ahead.) But in this story, I'm really scratching my head trying to figure out what the moral of the story is. Should he have not helped the turtle? Was his mistake agreeing to go on the adventure with the talking turtle? Was his mistake not being grateful for all the "eat, drink, and be merry" hedonism of the Dragon kingdom? Was it because he should have only stayed a short while? (A few days would have been like a year, and a month down there would already have been equivalent to more than 8 years up here.) Or... is there no moral to the story? Just... something magical with an unexpected, sad ending?

@@daemanuhr i was wondering that too, and what i found is, that you shouldnt let your family and friend behind you. if you realize it, it might already be too late. But yeah, this one is esspecially strange...

Imagine. You first lose your comfortable, enjoyable life in a castle all to check on your parents. Then you realize your parents aren't there, they're dead, because you've actually been gone for 300 years. So you're stranded in a town you once called home, your family is dead, your friends are dead, everyone is dead -- and you can't return back to the castle. Then when you thought it couldn't get any worse you opened the box and it did get worse. You lost your lifespan, too. Sad.

@@stephenbrown123 Yeah, right? That was his reward for helping out the turtle. Another thing, why on earth would you give someone a box as a gift, yet tell them never to open it? Thanks a lot, otohime! Seriously, though, this was great. The kanji were relatively easy and I got through this one with no problem. Love this series.

Wonderful story! It reminds me of the medieval fable of a monk who stops for what he perceives as a moment, on his way through the forest on an errand, to listen to a beautiful birdsong. When he gets to the monastery he was heading to, he discovers the abbot and all the monks he knew died many years ago. He had spent decades in ecstasy, listening to the birds! I past my N5 exam in July, and I understand nearly all of the story. こりは本当に悲しい話。

I also think it is pretty interesting that a 8th century story, played with the idea that time and duration is relative to the place you are. This is also what Einstein thought.
I am a student of jlpt n5 and this is very nice way to practice listening

Muchas gracias

why is everyone so vague in these stories. If she just told tarou what was in the box he wouldnt have grown old. Also if they told him that if he stayed in the palace for a long time literal centuries would pass, none of this would have happened. Im pissed at the fish people lol

Once upon a time there was a kind fisherman in one place. The name is Taro Urashima. One day, about six children gathered and were bullying a turtle on the beach. Taro felt sorry for him. "Everyone, don't do that." "Noisy" children never stop kicking or flipping turtles. Taro felt more and more pitiful. "I'll give you money, so sell the turtle." "Then you can sell it." Taro bought a turtle from the children and returned it to the sea. A few years later, while catching fish in the sea, Taro heard a voice calling himself. I did. "Taro-san, Taro-san" When you look at it, a turtle is swimming near the ship. "I am a turtle that you helped me a few years ago. I came to thank you. I swam down and down. After going down a long way, I suddenly saw a big palace on the bottom of the sea. was. Let's take you to Ryugu Castle. Ride me. "Taro terrifiedly rode a turtle. The turtle takes Taro into the sea and "Taro-san, this is Ryugu Castle." Taro got off the turtle. "Come on, here." The turtle guided Taro into Ryugu Castle. Since it is in the sea, many fish of various colors are swimming here and there. Beautiful in the back There was a nice woman. This is Otohime-sama. "Taro-san, I'm Otohime. Thank you for helping my turtle. increase. Please play slowly here. " As Taro said, he ate a lot of treats, drank a lot, sang and danced, and had a good time. "Taro-san, next time, look at the seasonal room." Otohime opened the eastern door. It was spring outside the eastern door. Otohime then opened the south door. It was summer outside the south door. It was autumn outside the west door. And it was winter outside the north door. Taro was gradually dumbfounded and forgot everything.
