Hey Chaos, think this video might have been inspired at least in part by my comment on your previous video - thanks a bunch, I had no idea it was disabled due to VRR. I figured on my desktop VRR was not active, but it is - it has to be completely disabled to be able to use BFI. Great video and keep it up! I love using BFI on the C1, it preserves brightness so well on the low/medium setting while increasing motion res. Great to know I still can use it on my PC when I need it.

Your previous video actually convinced my to upgrade to the C1, I've been using BFI in some games since last year, even if I have to disable HDR, the motion resolution is just so good while using BFI, but yeah, I have a BX and it just dimms the image too much, so with the C1 I'm expecting a decent upgrade while using BFI, I just bought the 55 C1 for around 650 dls, which was most likely an error, many buyers got their order cancelled but many other have been getting it already.

I agree with you as well that giving up VRR/G-Sync to get BFI is not a sensible default. Nice to have the option for sure though, especially at 120hz. I have two points. 1. I don't see why in theory both VRR/G-Sync and BFI couldn't be implemented. This is an unfortunate limitation, but I also figure that the complexity of implementation would be greatly increased if it was a requirement to be able to have both enabled. This is a gaming oriented TV but I guess still not sufficiently gaming oriented. 2. The typical use cases do lend themselves pretty well to this particular limitation. Basically, if you want the utmost in motion clarity where you may want BFI and give up on brightness etc. you are probably playing something competitively and want that kind of temporal edge. In that scenario you would want to be running with maxed out framerate all the time. It's in this scenario that VRR is a complete non-factor so turning it off isn't a big deal. In other scenarios where you want the best visual quality when rendering cannot often max out 120hz, you'll just have to do without BFI. I'd have to do some more testing (just got my G1) to see for myself how much improvement BFI provides for clarity but since these oled switch so damn fast I don't see the point. But maybe it will look better.

BFI helps to alleviate persistence blur, which is due to sample and hold. It does work to improve perceived clarity for the user. Again though, at what brightness cost. I dont have much of an issue with motion clarity, so i never bothered with bfi. Plus, bfi adds some measure of input lag.

@@stevenlu7324 with persistence, one is seeing motion blur caused by eye tracking on a sample-and-hold display. Eye movement causes the vertical lines to be blurred into thicker lines, filling the black gaps. This is motion blur from persistence (MPRT) instead of pixel transitions (GtG).

@@steadychaosproductions3376 I have been reading BlurBusters and reading some more about MPRT and stuff. Thanks for introducing this to me. I understand a lot better now. Especially with the UFO test page (a pretty well hidden one) where a map is being scrolled at an insane speed... I can definitely understand what's going on that introduces blur now. Basically the motion gets blurred when it is held like LCD and OLED displays do, because the eye can only smoothly track a virtually moving object, it is not capable of doing anything further to better track the step-function movement on these sample-and-hold signals, hence the image will become blurred -- with a CRT or sufficient BFI there is significant blanking time in which blur does not get introduced in this fashion. And it turns out I've already experienced it a lot with my Valve Index which has spectacularly small illumination pulse width.

How about when i play at 1440p+120 hz and fps are variable between 90/117 fps (DMC5). Will it still work ok? or does fps need to be 120 fps the whole time? Vsync any issue? So, what are the best uses of bfi? Also, high seems to dim a bit too much, low or medium ok? Using a 1070, so cant do vrr anyway, so maybe bfi will be good to use. BFI works at set Hz, like 60, 100, 120. I can't say for certain, but I believe it works at multiple different resolutions, as long as the fps is set to the aforementioned values. I believe BFI will work at variable fps, like for example you set the TV to 4K/120 and the fps drops to 105, BFI will continue to work. The only thing is VRR must be disabled. High is the best setting for BFI as that will give you the most motion clarity, but as you mention, it will also lead to pretty aggressive dimming. You can also use low and medium BFI to preserve brightness, but you'll get far less motion clarity.

@@steadychaosproductions3376 Ty for the reply. Yeah thats how i figured it would work. Been playing around just a little bit. Couldnt stand the flicker on bfi high and it dimmed a bit too much. Worked great for me in dmc5 @ 100-120 fps and ghost of tsushima on ps4pro, 30 fps. Couldnt stand the stutter on 30...way better with bfi, seems like a must. Think almost every game i will play on 30 i will use bfi now. Brightness and shadow detail seems good like this (checked patterns and ingame). Some highlight detail is missing because of tone mapping, but not that much. Worth the motion in some games for sure. Gonna check if color accuracy isnt off too much tomorrow. Just more eyetests. Seemed good so far. For anyone reading this: go test hdr tone mapping on and bfi low/medium, u may like it.
