Enjoying your training sessions is critical. I've never been able to relate to your mentality of not caring about the training and being able to push yourself properly because you want the results. For me, if I'm going to push myself properly, I have to enjoy the training. And it sounds like maybe you're starting to relate to me a little more in that regard than before. I also love training outside. It really makes a difference for my enjoyment, even here in Florida where it's 90 + degrees with humidity making it feel over 100. You're looking like a tank, man. The novelty of working out outside wears off when doing so is your only option year-round lol. I work out year-round, that includes when it's mid 90's and 70% humidity. I actually prefer that environment over 70's and relatively dry, when wearing layers almost becomes needed to achieve peak warm-up. When it gets winter and everything you touch is cold and 2 layers is mandatory to even feel like lifting, thats when actual motivation starts. I wish I had basic equipment indoors.

I currently have my home gym in my condo, but it's always been a dream of mine to own a house with an outdoor gym in the countryside someday. My plan is to construct some sort of a mini-playground with cement and corrosion-resistant steel tubes. I'll design it so that I can perform pull ups, dips, inverted rows, handstand push ups, dragon flag and human flag. The highest bar will be 2x my height so that I can attach rings on it. Not sure if that's the kind of recommendation you're looking for, but I think having a more permanent setup like this will pay off for years. I totally get your desire to train outside. I have an entire home gym setup for outside that I use in the winter and spring and it's fantastic. My time of year to go outside is opposite of yours, though, since I'm near San Antonio, Texas. Some days in the summer get to 110F+ of "real feel" and it's absolutely brutal. Training indoors at a commercial gym just isn't the same. As for equipment - the dip bar you have is really great. You can get a cheap tower that you could do pullups on. You could also get squat stands like Olympic lifters use, put a bar on that and use that for pullups. Throw some plates out there and you have a pretty robust system, though I would recommend using or buying weights that you don't mind rusting, because the day might come when you don't want to put everything up or cover it all :D Also, rings are a fantastic tool. Geoffrey Verity Schofield seemed pretty partial to them for a while, considering his book haha. One of my favorite resources for outdoor training is the channel @Kboges. He trains a lot outdoors and while calisthenic-focused, shows a lot of variations that can be very hypertrophy-friendly as well. Enjoy the great weather and good luck with your training!

Power tower is definitely the way to go. Try and get one with as many grip variations as possible because, as an outdoor lifter, it’s inevitable you’ll be doing tons of pull ups and will need to vary the grips to avoid overuse. After that I would recommend getting some beater/already rusted weights to leave outside. It’s one thing to bring the barbell out when you’re gonna train but it’s a whole other thing to have to bring out 100s of pounds in plates. And if you have trees with branches strong enough, rings is a great way to go

They make outdoor pull up bars with big wood beam that you sink some amount of inches into the ground and theres something they put i think concrete dry powder at the bottom. Not sure. I would either base the distance between and size of the wood beam, on the pull up bars you plan to use. But it is possible to use conduit or plumbing pipe to have as a pull up bar. You could even have an axle size bar just for the hell of it since its just for fun. I would get a yoke to use as a power rack to unrack from. Although the yoke could double as a pull up bar if you set it to be tall. Probably something with a flat leveled surface would be a good idea at some point and keeping it of modest sizes would be something to consider because youre probably gonna habe to clean it up a decent amount to try and maintain the quality of the surface and not have it be too messy. That could be anything from a small concrete foundation to even having a deadlift platform built ontop. Also if u dont find the kneeling preacher variations to be that comfortable id just get another preacher that you could essentially consider as a beater preacher bench and embrace that your outdoor gym will become something rustic overtime. But they do make i think york makes some smaller easier to move preacher benches i remember seeing one. Which would only be useful for like a single arm, but you know maybe just do a single arm preacher curl and just bring out an adjustable bench or get a hold of an adjustbale bench that youd consider to use as a beater bench. If u did have a level platform, you could also opt for those portable looking squat stands to unrack from for strict press. Another thing id seriously consider, is that you should not have buy everything at once, rather just one at a time. Dont be afraid to mess up a diy jobber because you can always have more of one piece of equipment when youre going into it diy in soem fashion, in order to have a better more successful attempt at something the next time. Its good to be resourceful and to plan to reuse stuff or repurpose things. Also if you do opt for buying a yoke, consider doing yoke strict press because you can push harder on that variation similar to what the strongman did in a event some time called the safety press. Essentially you can have the bar land on the floor and unload when it makes contact with ground thus much easier to dismount than mounting bar back onto jcups. But some yokes may be too heavy and overbuilt for this purpose and if you want to not fuck up the bottoms you might want to adjust the height to have some crash pads on the platform whilst having the bar still meeting with clavicle or slightly below where you can brace on contact bent knees to break it off the floor a good 0.5 inch or 1 inch. Tom haviland uses it for seated strict press and he does all his lifting outdoors. So it could be a cool idea.

Edit: I just realized you talked about pull-up bars and rings etc., a few incentives for setting it up: -The bar will be difficult, as you described it. So a power rack is a reasonable idea. It doesn't even necessarily have to be a big, cage-like rack. There are smaller ones with nice bars that can withstand loads of upwards of 350 lbs for the pull-up bar. You can then use olympic rings on that bar. When not used, you can obv. cover it up with a tarpaulin or smth. similar. -Alternatively, you could find a sturdy branch and use rings there which you can use for pull-ups as well. But this option is probably a bit trickier to pull off. Generally though, rings and bars are amazing. You can do all sorts of effective workouts with them, even at your stage, as described in the text paragraph below, especially with weight. One way for you to combine a perfect environment with a at least more optimized training instead of the "suboptimal training", as you described it, is by putting up a stable, robust pull-up bar between two pillars and supplementing this by gymnastics rings. Weighted dips and pull-ups on rings (pull-ups obviously also on the bar) are incredibly fullfilling. Also, rows on rings (with partially hanging legs for example), overhead tricep extension on lowered rings, push-ups on lowered rings and other exercises. Just a thought if you have a nice outside space, which you seem to do.

Hey BB, if you’re interested in lifting out in nature, I think this could be a great opportunity to see how stable and hypertrophic calisthenics could be when applying your philosophy. To that end, I’d highly recommend gymnastic rings - preferably with wide straps - and a weighted vest. If you do get rings, maybe try performing most exercises around 20-45 degrees away from parallel to gravity. I’ve noticed that the rings get exponentially less stable the more parallel to gravity, but the resistance profile on the exercises don’t change. Therefor you can use a weighted vest to increase the stimulus over time. Sorry for the rant, but yeah ring Pelican curls, JM Press and Overhead Extensions are among my favorites. I hope you give them a try.

I like this idea - good for the budget lifters out there as well. I get a decent amount done with rings when I travel.

The way you are with environment I am with exercise selection. Even though I like all the exercises I’m doing, I get bored of doing the same things, so recently I started giving myself a freestyle lift. I just go in the gym and give myself a 45 min timer, and I just do as many sets and exercises I can in that timeframe. This also lets me experiment with different exercises I might eventually add to my planned workouts.

bro get a sandbag for outside. a 150lbs bag was good for me at first but i move up to a 250 bag filled to 180 quickly. i mainly do bearhug carries, but shouldering and highpulls are very good as well

Its interesting, people usually look less jacked when they are in a daylight but you look way more jacked :D

Haha thanks brotha! I think it’s because I just don’t use filters and crazy lighting that often, but when lighting is equated you’ll see who’s truly jacked and who’s faking it (cough aesthetics brahs cough)

A few cinderblocks and a climbing rope are 2 cheap things that greatly improved my outdoor gym.

I would say get some sandbags, but that doesn’t really seem up your alley. Maybe a easily portable Nordic bench/GHD for the outside is a good move though

I do actually really enjoy carries, especially farmers carries. Sandbag carries I do enjoy for conditioning work, I could see myself going for it for sure. Would probably clear some trails in the woods for them if I go that route

I agree being in the right atmosphere can help when it comes to lifting .I would say do whatever you will that motivates you.reminds me of NH with his out door workouts.maybe some Olympic rings.

I have a squat rack and dumbells on my porch and my big rocks beside my house in an area thats become flattened and dense due to the constant slamming down of those rocks. It really sucks lifting them in the winter and sometimes the rain. Same thing with the porch but at least theres a roof. I have no other option than to loft outside and it definitely gets annoying sometimes, winter, mosquitos etc. Theres also a lot of reason to like it though: Fresh air/breezes, rain (again), sunlight or scenic view. Plus dealing with all that has been good for my mentality.

I’ve been feeling the exact same way. Not feeling as motivated for the gym as I normally do. Been thinking about having a break from it until, maybe mid September time. I’ve been prioritising doing stuff outside, waking, running and swimming. I have free weights at home, but am tempted to get a pull up/ dip stand and some gymnastic rings. I was thinking that maybe I should have a ‘summer break’ from the gym every year.

Check one of those dips/pullups station that you can get for 150 bucks. And on top of it you can throw a cheap cable pulley system

I love training but going to the gym and having to be there to train has been so tiring lately, I totally agree with your point about the atmosphere.

Hey bb :), I've been following your ulul and having great success, especially with my back development. I've just encountered one issue: I dislike smith bench press and regular bench. Could I substitute bench press with dips or push-ups for the same sets and reps? If so, which would be better, thank you 👍
