So much for "gingers have no souls"!!! Luke Gerard Kelly - a ginger man who, although he didn't suffer fools gladly, had a heart as big as his voice, and in the words of his colleague Barney McKenna, "the soul of an angel". Yes, I'm a fangirl. And I have yet to make that trip to Glasnevin...
@Mitcherooney

Wonderful, wonderful, just wonderful. I was just thinking while listening to that performance that one of the special things that makes Luke's rendition so powerful and electrifying was his ability to get the (difficult combination of) words out in a way that is almost icy and clinical yet still retain the essence of the song. I'm glad to say that I did see him on stage, but of course, that is many years ago. He left us, with still so much to give. Where's his monument? Come on Dublin!

I wish I could find a recording the way my mum used to sing it when I was a child. Maybe it was her own version. It had this changed verse: "Oh you may talk about your soldiers(?), your sailors and the rest, Your tailors and your shoemakers may please the ladies best, But there's divil a one among them gets their flinty hearts to melt Like the boys around the boiler digging the hot asphalt!" It always made more sense to me than the original lyrics.

He's cupping his hand behind his ear. Try it. You can hear yourself properly in a noisy environment and even adjust the volume by the way you do the cupping. Many traditional did it (and still do it), it is very effective.

I've answered the "Tipperary ranks" question in another comment. The song dates bacjk to the later 19C, it was sold on various broadside ballads (sheets of words sold on the streets) in Dublin but also parts of Kelvingrove museum (mentioned in this version) is in Glasgow. Other versions use museum names in other places. Ewan MacColl adapted the song for the Radio Ballad "Song of a road" and this is where the chorus comes from, regrafted back onto an earlier version of the song.
