Luke Kelly wasn't singing when I met him. I worked in the A. B. Clery Unit of St. Laurence's Hospital (aka The Richmond) and I nursed him towards the end of his life. Over the decades I've nursed a lot of people with the type of brain tumour that he had but it's not because of his fame that he stands out in my memory. He was just plain brave and funny. He let nothing phase him and he made the best of a very bad deal. Simple as that. Luke Kelly is truly a legend! Thanks for posting this.

Ronnie started life as an apprentice in an electrical shop in Dunlaoghaire and then became a teacher of English in Spain, where he acquired and learned a guitar (flamenco) before returning to Ireland as a ballad singer and guitarist with the Dubliners. Guitars in Irish trad groups were rare in the 1960's. He brought it to the fore when he appeared on RTE in 1961. This ballad session programme got me involved in irish ballads and guitar playing at the ripe old age of 10. I haven't looked back since. God bless and keep Ronnie, Barnie, Luke, Ciaran and Shane. I won't include John ( the fiddler) who is still with us........

Wow, I've heard this exact version so many times but never saw this video until just now. It's one of my favorites because not only is the song itself comical, but you can feel how much fun the boys are having with it. The few mistakes Luke makes lend such a human factor to it, and his ability to laugh at them himself is a testament to what kind of person he was. It's a beautiful thing, seeing Luke from back then with so much life in his eyes and passion in his voice..

Being born in London(with Irish Parents from Kerry, who Loved the Dubliners)My Mom always made a point of pi/up the Irish Papers from the Church&listened to "Radio Athlone"&other Irish show that was available. ..So all these elements allowed them to hold on2 some of their Culture, while having to live in a strange Land(My mum never trually Acclimatized)So listening to "The Dubliners"& "The Chieftian's was immensely important&Heartwarming and i would imagine this was the same for many Irish Immigrants living in the UK(which wasn't particularly welcoming to it's new arrivals)But many yrs have passed&and I now live in the States..And the thought just crossed my mind, that when u want to see live Music perform,u often have to pay too$$$..Now if u had to do that 2c the Boys play,u wouldn't have any issue at all&really would consider it a Privilege!

Well, if you've got a wing-o, Take her up to Ring-o Where the waxies sing-o all the day; If you've had your fill of porter, And you can't go any further Give your man the order: "Back to the Quay!" Chorus: And take her up to Monto, Monto, Monto Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo, To you! The dirty Duke of Gloucester, The dirty old impostor Took mot and lost her, up the Furry Glen. He first put on his bowler And he buttoned up his trousers, And he whistled for a growler and he says, "My man!" Take me up to Monto, Monto, Monto Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo, To you! You see the Dublin Fusiliers, The dirty old bamboozlers, De Wet'll get the childer, one, two, three. Marching from the Linen Hall There's one for every cannonball, And Vicky's going to send yis all, o'er the sea. But first go up to Monto, Monto, Monto Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo, To you! (Extra Verse not in the Luke Kelly Collection!) When Carey told on Skin-the-goat, O'Donnell caught him on the boat He wished he'd never been afloat, the filthy skite. It wasn't very sensible To tell on the Invincibles They stood up for their principles, day and night. And they all went up to Monto, Monto, Monto Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo, To you! Now when the Tsar of Russia And the King of Prussia Landed in the Phoenix Park in a big balloon, They asked the police band To play "The Wearin' of the Green" But the buggers in the depot didn't know the tune. So they both went up to Monto, Monto, Monto Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo, To you! The Queen she came to call on us, She wanted to see all of us I'm glad she didn't fall on us, she's eighteen stone. "Mister Me Lord Mayor," says she, "Is this all you've got to show me?" "Why, no ma'am there's some more to see, Pog mo thoin!" And he took her up Monto, Monto, Monto Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo, To you More lyrics www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/luke_kelly/monto_take_her_up_to_monto-lyrics-1152746.html#ixzz3iGlQZSmY
