Nobody writes deadpan lyrics like Lyle. They are so good you almost miss what a wonderful musician he is, as well. One of my all-time favorites of any genre.

I just love Lyle Lovett, and I thank God for the man who opened up my closed, sheltered little world and who introduced me to his music; had the opportunity to see and hear him live once at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1997, and I was struck then by his graciousness.

He cited, of all people in ROLLING STONE no less, Guy Clark as a SOURCE in the singer songwriter's craft. I bought his first LP at the Rherin Main Germany BX in 1984 for copla bucks because "He sounded alot like Jessie Winchester"!! (Got his very first one as well) Dig that, he sounded like Tennessee Blueblood Rhumba Man, and was so damn different in his own right...Large Band was an abrupt turn, but this cat refuses to cave in to asy "established" orders. ?Make it a Cheeseburger" in deed

it's a profound song of respect and love. once people were poor and had so little, all they could leave to their family was perhaps an old suit, or a gold tooth. here lyle's grandmother had a tooth of gold, I think he is describing how wonderful she was and the tooth of gold he now wears on his finger reminds him of her greatness.

Nervous laughter, or perhaps them realizing the narrator and the singer are not the same person. The same difficulty Randy Newman fought for years, and that Lou Reed kvetched about. People don't necessarily assume an author's characters are reflections of the author, but they seem unable in some cases to realize the 'I' in a song is not the person singing.

Why are they laughing. This never struck me as a funny song. The characters are pretty sinister I always wanted to know how he felt about it. Btw the recorded version has the girl’s age as 18 “or so.”

Steve Bailey I love LL. Ive been a huge fan since seeing him on Letterman in the 80s. I’ve seen him live five times-more than any other artist I enjoy. I know his sense of humor, but this song, while I like it very much, never struck me as funny.

@@maremacd I suppose it's subjective. I always thought Uncle Leon imprisoned in the closet and his grandma asking if she really 'had to go' were 'grand guignol'. However, if your reading's a bit straighter I can understand your irritation at folks laughing. The girl being re-cast as 21 in this version definitely takes some bite out of the song.
@theunrealtimemm

@@stevebailey5591 I always read the bit about the closet as blackmailing a relative until he essentially disappears from public view as the person he really is. As in keeping him in the closet.

I expect that he stopped singing this song because the stupid audience didn’t understand it. It is a great song but it isn’t really funny.
