Glad you chose to chop out this shot video from the long form. I didn't quite grasp the technique the first time through, but being able to focus on just this enabled me to understand the why and how. Better to post a whole project and follow up this way than posting the snippets first and then the whole thing.
Well, that certainly looks a bit easier than doing it with a jig on the table saw! 🤦🏻♂️ So many hours of my life wasted! Oh well, I’ve only been woodworking for 30 years, maybe someday I’ll figure it all out! 😁 Thanks for sharing… you always offer such good tips and tricks!

Thank you so much. I believe we could live three lifetimes and still never learn everything about woodworking 😁

Great tip! How do you decide exactly how much of the ultimate taper to take on the first half-length cut?
@ChadStanton

So in my case I wanted to have a 1/4” taper from top to bottom. That requires taking 1/8” off of each side.

@@ChadStanton I understand that. But how did you decide to take off 3/32" for the first jointing halfway up your final taper? Is there a proportion?

James Hamilton (Stumpy Nubs) showed this in a video a while back. He probably had the same source you did. Bill

Interesting. I know I’m not the first to use this trick and if i can I like to credit the source I learned it from. 😊

hate to say it but as a retired furniture maker i was taught this when i trained many years ago. to be honest i see youtubers (not chad) claiming to have come up with all sorts of stuff that was common industry practice.

I actually was trying this the other day and was having some problems. They didn’t all end evenly at the top of the leg. Idk if that makes sense, if so I’d appreciate any tips or idea what I’m doing wrong.

Mmmmmm I’m not sure. It has always worked for me. Could you make me a video of you doing it and send it to me? Maybe I can figure out what’s going wrong for you.

@@ChadStanton I’m going to try again maybe this weekend. I’m going to take more time setting it up and really ensure my legs are square. I’ll try to video myself but like you pointed out in your chair video, it’s not easy making a clear video lol. Thanks for all you do. I’m one of those guys who wants to take it to the next level and who really appreciate expert craftsman such as yourself!!
