There are plenty of masculine men who are not heterosexual. My cousin is one of them. I know some very flamboyant gay men who will throw fists once you say something mean to them. It’s 2024. Whoever cares about this stuff these days will be forever unhappy.

when I was 18 and started riding, I never made my sexuality a point of concern when it came to being friends with my riding buddies. but when they did find out I was gay, they accepted me with open arms. yeah they would make gay jokes but I didn't care it wasn't directed at me. and it was nice being the token gay guy of the group. I was respected as a rider and an individual. this was circa 2005. I really miss those days.

I’m glad you had that experience. However, I do wonder how they would have been if they had known you were gay before they knew you as a person. I’m concerned that they still made gay jokes because in my experience it’s because usually they think you’re different because they know you and they still have horrible views otherwise.
@andyincalimoto843

@@jaybee4118 I think actions speak louder than words. I know when I would roll up I was greeted with a hand shake or a head nod. If they did know I was gay before they knew me as a rider I think they would still have judge me by my ability to ride than the person I’m sleeping with. Riding is what brought us together so it only makes sense that’s the criteria we use to bring each other into the fold.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family where my dad worked to the bone for us to go traveling every school summer. We'd often default to parts of Europe, but some years we went further east, to Slovenia/Croatia. Other times we went to South America instead. You mentioned wishing Americans would travel to "open their mind". I'm a living example of how true that is. The laws, the infrastructure, the city planning, the driving behaviors found in Europe are mind blowing. How much better traffic flows in the EU compared to the US is mindboggling. I wish people traveled, because then they'd come home and realize just how stupid the US does stuff just like I did. It's wild going over there, then coming back to the US and thinking that honking is something you can get pulled over and FINED for, when in most of the world the horn is a form of passive communication (Because that's the most logical use of it). Wild. It's all wild. US road laws are atrocious.

The thing that bothers me most about the UK is that there is virtually no public access to freshwater waterways for fishing. Fishing rights are privately owned, even in the national parks! Coming from the western US where public land, water and fishing access is the norm the idea of a place where these things hardly exist seems crazy.

Damn, I just saw this video and can't believe youtube didn't show me this amazing interview. I didn't JohnTheDuncan's channel and now I'm excited to check his content. I'm glad you talked about how content creation (and content watching) is not activism. I consistently try to get into people's heads that action is needed, but my generation (z) feel very hopeless and powerless, which I believe would be an interesting topic for a video. Also I didn't know your girlfriend is trans! My wife is trans and it makes me so happy to see trans women in happy relationships with partners that don't keep them on the dl. Like seriously, it brings my lady so much happiness and relief to witness trans women succeeding in life and you have no idea how this small amount of representation changes everything for younger trans people (or maybe you do---)

The university I went to had normal fraternities and sororities, but it also had one co-ed fraternity. (Just a local one; not a member of a national organization.) I kind of wish I'd joined, or at least looked into it a bit more. Having "fraternity siblings" sounds cool, and I think it would have avoided some of the toxicity of single-gender organizations. I didn't want to join a traditional fraternity, because I knew instinctively that I didn't want to be in an all-male environment, even if I couldn't articulate why. And joining a sorority wasn't an option, because I didn't know I was trans yet. (And even if I had known, it was a less open-minded time back then.)

John mentioning cyclists just made me laugh because I do ride a bicycle in the city and yes. I live in Germany and there's a love-hate relationship to bikes as in you either hate them or you ride them and everyone in a car hates them which makes traffic a daily struggle. Nothing like a car door opening right in front of you to wake you up in the morning, it's great!

Hmmm, don't like the point about not voting for Joe Biden much. For harm reduction it has to be "Vote Blue no matter who" at this point and it speaks of privilege to be on a purist high horse here. No leftist would ever call voting for Biden revolutionary but that's also not the point. Will a (socialist) revolution happen if Trump gets elected? I doubt it. Things will get a lot shittier. Maybe not as much in Scotland right away but definitely the US.
@SquidTips

@@SquidTips Not really ;) It is important to be careful about it as most bike lanes are right next to parking cars and and to watch for lights/cars about to move. With some attention it's unlikely that something happens though sometimes somewhat quick reactions are necessary. Compared to going fast on motorbikes it's probably much easier, of course. The riding can get a bit reckless but at speeds that usually won't make for lethal accidents if moving cars are not involved.

I'm not even halfway through this video but i really appreciate the various conversation topics you are touching on and how they all relate to each other through the common factor of patriarchy and the currently widespread view of masculinity. I'm bisexual and in a relationship with another bisexual, but we look like a straight couple to the outside world. I have literally never heard anyone talk about this specific experience of invisibility, which does add on to the bi phases of self-doubt ("am i actually queer enough to share queer spaces?"). It feels so nice and a bit cathartic to hear you both talk about the experience of being in a straight-presenting relationship without having always fit the heterosexual norms. Thank you so much, I don't usually see this talked about. (Timestamps for myself to come back to: 19:52 20:28 )

there's a difference from being better off and getting something from patriarchy. if men don't suffer from it why should they get rid of it? billionaires aren't happy just because they don't have to worry about medical bills they can't have any real friends without being super paranoid and would be better off getting rid of the vast majority of wealth. wouldn't the same be true for men they want want abortion they want no fault divorce so on and so forth.
