This was a multi 3 1/2 floppy disc install on dos when I had my pentium 1 on windows 95. The ORIGINAL city builder that I fell in love with. One thing about the original horribly pixilated game was there were absolutely no tooltips and no explanation of stats and how they worked. Spent game after game of trial and error to find out things like WOW halflling slingers rock. Usually every game ended up making a giga stack of heroes with air walking enchantments and 6-12 movement points per round and go around and wreck every city and high level monster den. There are definitely better heroes than others, Mr. Dervish is an above average hero for sure but like every unit in this game, you need the levels. The only other difference I noticed was the hex map when the original was a square grid, which was the only kind of map until I believe civ 3? Or 4? Kind of crazy to imagine. Oh and klackons grow like wildfire, keep their unrest down and they make you mad money, and wolf riders which are decent. I wish they would make a true sequel to this game, Paradox got it close with age of wonders

Me it lead into Warlords which in turn lead to HoM&M and Age of Wonders. I do remember wishing this one had a hot seat multiplayer though, all of those other games have that function and it is nice to have a couple of buddies over for pizza, beer and 4X. :) And yeah, HoM&M III was great, but as I remember it, I liked Age of wonders: Shadowmagic even more. Mostly because AoWs combat was better, Might and magic combat turns into stacks of doom when you played a bit. AoW had more tactics, shooting people in the back was effective and it always utilized hero units better in combat then any Heroes game. Heroes strategy part was excellent though, particularly in 3 but 4 was pretty good too. 2 felt a bit simplistic still and I never played the first game. The 5th was still pretty good but after that, they screwed up. MoM wasn't the first 4X game, but it was certainly one of the first that stood out. Warlords II a year earlier was also pretty good but unlike MoM it was somewhat ugly even for it's time and it had lackluster combat.

The original still holds up as my favorite strategy game of all time, and I thought this remaster was an incredibly well done recreation of it. There's something really comforting about old school turn based strategy games that you don't really get from the new ones, and I'm not sure how to explain it. It's more a feel thing than anything else.

Units do lower unrest when stationed in a town. But that unrest reduction isn't visible on the main screen (there is a way to see, but I forget how). I think this is because the main screen only shows "permanent" unrest, not the temporary reduction of soldiers. That said, if you put enough soldiers in town, rebels will drop to 0, which is what you want.

You know what, I wasn't sold on the hex map when it first came out (I really liked how different civs cared different amounts about city overlap; made planning an elf empire appreciably different to spamming out infinity lizards), but this actually looks pretty good. It's a shame they didn't do multiplayer - I know it might be a pain with the turn-based combat and occasional lack of balance, but people play HoMM multiplayer, and that's got both of those issues.

My biggest problem with the remake is the lack of innovation when it comes to tactical combat. They replaced the old square grid with a hex grid, and made the terrain much more artistic and visible. Great! But I can’t use this terrain defensively. In other words, a unit on a hill gets no defensive advantage, at all. There are no mechanics for flanking attacks, a staple of modern 4x tactical battles either. It seems to me the designers were too fearful of upsetting long time fans of the original to make these very common sense innovations.
@chumley307
7 ай бұрын
I agree -- it would be nice if they made a toggle for things like flanking, zoc, and terrain bonuses. If it was a toggle, it could leave the game playable for purists and still give something to those who want something new.
@therexbellator
7 ай бұрын
When it comes to remakes/remasters it's a damned if you do/damned if you don't situation. Innovating the combat would mean adding things that aren't true to the original, and nothing raises the hackles of purists more than changes that are deemed unnecessary. It's always possible a future update could add a modified ruleset that could add the innovation you're looking for on top of the combat while giving people the option to use the base version so everyone's happy.

Alchemy should give you magical weapons from the beginning as well. Order of building generally: granary, shrine (increase happiness, +1 mana), marketplace (gold), farmers market (extra population growth and 2 food) - now maybe a military building or if you have a special mineral that gives you better weapons like mithril or adamantine then work towards alchemist tower - then sawmill (also gives archers) and then Forester's Guild for additional 2 food. Most archers (except elven longbowmen) are crap from the beginning, but if they just stay in the city (and patrol the city, they get a lot better). Then temple (increase happiness, +2 mana).

A few corrections to your thinking: 1) slingers are not as good as in vanilla old game. They do need to get experience to do real damage. 2) halfling bowmen and shaman are easier to get early and 80% as good as slingers at ranged attacks. Plenty for your early needs. 3) the noble trait of heroes does not level up. 4) unrest works exactly as in old MoM except some coefficients are different. in short: the same. Two garrison units(not fantastic ones) give you 1 less level of unrest. Lower your taxes as you don't want any unrest. 5) you have alchemist. You do have unlimited manna to trade if you manage to get a good trade for gold. 6) Islands are bad for food production. You do want plains for that. Each city has "food capacity". 7) You should have taken that shield from the merchant to save your hero. It was a good deal. 8) Buying buildings is not something you can spam easily early on. You should do that with buildings that grow your economy(prod, pop, gold, magic in that order) and nothing else.

12 years ago in may Paradox released something VERY similar to a new version to MoM called Warlock: Master of the Arcane. I enjoyed it very much, and still do from time to time. But it lacks something from the original, even though it has the bestagon hexagon setup like this one. Mostly I missed unit stacking that let you create parties fighting together. In MotA it works very similar to the single unit battles in Civ V and VI without a detailed battle area map. But at least there are portals to other planes in the game with its own monsters and units that only occasionally spills over into the main world.

A few minutes and I wonder if Potato is going to comment on the hexes being sideways. I played this remake recently (without any DLC) and was impressed by the fidelity to the original game. That said, there are some glaring flaws. Once the map fills up with cities, assigning new orders to cities becomes very "sticky" in a way that indicates that the game's code needs to be optimized. The game also lacks a way to multi-cast spells like Change Terrain. And I'd like an auto-build optio that won't make a city build units; even Call to Power back in the day let you create custom build queues that let you load one into a new city "fire and forget" style.

Quite weird to write this on a game remaster playthrough but still oddly fitting. Could you showcase Solium Infernum (2024)? It is a remake to a 2009 game of the same name and it released just now and as a 4X it would be right up your alley. Also, what I know, the original had a cult following that might make the new released game explode in popularity in the next few weeks. If you're at all interested, they have a 8 min trailer that quite showcases what it is about and what differentiates it from other strategy games.

It's technically a "remaster" of Caster of magic with a lot of community mod influence(warlord). A lot of Caster of Magic specific logic that was absent in original MoM and controversial at the time Seravi added it in CoM, many moons before it even became commercial at GOG. I personally like what they did with this game. A lot of the game design choices I'm impressed with. Also mechanics are properly implemented and NPC combat actually is properly implemented, unlike original MoM _AND_ CoM. Enemy wizards can't just spam useless units and conquer the strongest nodes, which was a massive weakness in the old games. My main issue with this game is terrible performance. .. which should be easily fixable, but somehow isn't. Yep UI is kinda shit also, but workable. P.S. yeah the no overlapping is pretty bad in this game.

Ah, Master of magic. It brings back some sweet memories. I don't think a button for accepting the result of an autocombat is wise though, if you had that you would always try the auto version of any battle. Autocombat is always a risk in any game that uses it (Age of wonders do but the most annoying one that could wipe your far superior army rather often was Warlords III). It saves you a lot of time so I see it as risk Vs reward. It stops you from having to manually fight every single fight, particularly the boring ones. If you however always use it, your losses will be far higher then if you fight every fight manually.

Please, don't listen to PotatoMcWhiney moan and whine about the UI and graphics. This game is great, but sullied by bad press from fly-by-night KZitemrs who don't even play the game regularly. Some players actually prefer the cleaner UI and graphics. AoW4 (which owes everything to MoM) can have the most cluttered-as-fuck interface and bad unit and magic balance, but because it's the new hot thing, KZitemrs give it a free pass on everything. Ridiculous. Meanwhile, people love to bitch about MoM because it's an "old" game and the remake is somehow expected to be perfect. This is the first red flag/indication that these reviewers don't know anything about the game, have barely read the manual, strategy guides, etc., and are only posting videos on it because it's a slow news week. I'm sure, now that AoW4 has a new expansion out, PotatoMcAutoresolve will disappear from the MoM space, never to be seen again--just like all the other fly-by-night KZitemrs. Ps. MoM had a huge, new expansion recently, with a brand new race, encounter areas, traits, leaders, AI, etc., but these changes are noticeably missing from this video. It really makes you wonder when this video was actually made, and if it's not just "filler" that's been sitting on a shelf.
