Hi ! Thanks a lot for this very nice video. That shader editor window really needs documentation, but all tabs can be useful ("instance functions" let you define functions that use the node's parameters, and "Main code" can be used to define intermediate variables that will be used by different outputs). Dev is indeed in the export_plugin branch but is not usable inside Godot yet. It'll be merged into master whenever it's ready. ;)

@@unfa00 Material Maker was a Godot addon when I started it, but I decided to make it standalone. There's an addon that can directly import procedural textures into Godot (and render them either in Godot or in the exported project), but it is a bit tedious to install ATM. Maybe when it's possible to create Godot addons that are not inside projects, it will make sense to integrate it again.

Hey Mike, thanks for letting us know of these tools. Amazing work there. I belive the _orm map refers to occlusion, roughness and metalic together, one in each channel. It's a common practice to mix the channels when they are black&white to reduce the texture size of the final object.
@gamefromscratch

Yes Material Maker used to output Metallic, Roughness and Ambient Occlusion in separate textures, but Juan mentionned ORM textures in a Godot Vulkan progress report, so I decided to anticipate this. ;)

I know the video is an older one, but just as an explanation: The third texture image (ORM) stores the texture information from all three left over attributes: Ambient Occlusion, Roughness and Metallic. Since all of these attributes can be stored in terms of shades of gray (or grayscale) you can store each one in of the given color channels R, G and B of the texture image, so you don't need multiple images. It's mostly to save space, and to reduce time of defining and assigning texture data on the gpu through the graphics backend.

Yes, but Blender is really not great if you want to export PBR maps, and even less great if you want to make them seamlessly repeating. I have been doing that and it's really not a great workflow. That's why I'm super excited about Material Maker. Also - this has much more tools that are missing from Blender's shaders - for example a Blur node or any type of morphogical function. These are not possible in Blender due to the nature of it's shader engine.

This is an amazing tool. I suck at writing shaders and having a visual editor is a must in a game engine for me. I'm considering trying out Godot for a while now, but would really want to stick with using C#. Any opinion about how they're doing with the implementation of that language?

Can you make custom nodes as composition of existing nodes like in substance designer? Or you can make custom nodes from editing text only? You can group selected nodes with Ctrl-G. This feature is quite new and needs more work (editing the inputs/outputs of a group is not possible yet), but i's already quite usable. 07:37 FYI, I would clarify with the original creator whether just copy/pasting code from somewhere else is possible (I kinda doubt it). If it is built on Godot Engine, it more than likely generates that GUI / processes that shader logic using Godot Shader Language which is similar to, but not precisely the same as, other shading languages. Please see the official documentation on migrating shader code for more information: docs.godotengine.org/en/3.1/tutorials/shading/migrating_to_godot_shader_language.html

OK, actually, it's Godot shader language. But most differences with GLSL are how the shader interacts with the engine (mainly the predefined variables), and that part cannot really be used in Material Maker. So you can start in (for example) Shadertoy to create your base functions, then copy and paste them into the "Global functions" tab, and write "glue code" in other tabs. Well this part really needs a doc.
