We're talking about MASH in Maya, not MESH. Mash is a relatively new module with amazing capabilities. It's speciality is to handle lots (and by lots I mean hundreds or thousands) of polygon objects without much performance or rendering costs. That alone is a big step into the future.
The animations you do with Mash may seem abstract to you, but if you think about a stock video for a documentary where you need hundreds of pills of different shape and colour being thrown onto a table, you will embrace Mash.
In this tutorial I introduce the basic concept and guide you to make hundreds of cubes collide with a torus. The basic concept addresses the issue of layering Mash nodes (does the random distribution follow the dynamic simulation or vice versa?), breaking Maya generic UI rules and the odd thing of the BulletSolver.
