We are busy trying to get some of the vehicles ready to take to our local show! This AVRE was hard to start and down on power so I decided to fit a Electric fuel pump!
Very good to see you not only maintaining but improving these amazing bits of equipment. I just hope that they don't get wrecked in their next ownership, they are, in their way, our heritage!

Re burning stale fuel (but running badly) or changing it .. the best compromise in my experience* is to add some new fuel to the old fuel, even a little new really helps it run better because it has all the volatiles missing from the stale, but you still get the energy left in the old its not wasted. You not the tank is only a 1/3 full, if you can fill it with fresh to be 2/3 would be great, ie 50:50 (* in an old classic sports car not a tank, but petrol in an engine is petrol in an engine which is what we are discussing here)

A good explanation of altering the fuel allocation for leisure pursuits. The reality of war was that the expectation was for a fairly short life but better protected than the models that preceded it.

Our museum Cent has the Long Range tank bolted to the back so, like you, we binned the two front tanks and the Morris aux generator. And, yeah, the two engine fuel pumps aren’t great at sucking fuel from the back after sitting for a while. So I added the same Holly pump and regulator, but as a priming pump, just to fill the two engine pumps and those two massive carbs, so it would start quickly on the engine pumps. Pretty handy the 12 volt alternative power supply these old Cents had for 1950’s radios!
@glynluff2595
10 ай бұрын
The auxiliary generator was needed for the whole of the Centurion’s military life as not only the early 40/50’s sets were valve but the Larkspur series that followed. Only when Clansman was issued in the later seventies did transistorised technology enter service. These could be checked via a transportable computer but the poor Tels guys spent much of their time fixing this as it did not like rough going! The other reason for the aux genny was the FVGCE was valve operated. This required a 410v rail and two gyros so electrical demand was high even sitting and watching. In their last years some gun tanks were used as armoured OP for guns and this required Navaid another gyro system for navigation across a neuclear battlefield devoid of landmarks. These rarely ran well outside the testing bay in a REME Field Workshop. They basically liked to be kept warm and still so an ideal asset to be placed in armour on the North German Plain.
@bigold81electra

I think you misunderstood my reply. The older Cents like ours (1952) had the ability to supply 12 volts for the radios of the time. Nothing to do with the aux. generator. When the 12 volt radios became obsolete, the 12 volt supply on the battery-balance panel to the right of gunner was deleted but the wiring to the driver’s switchboard for the 12 volt supply was retained. That’s what we now use to power various 12 volt add-ones like the Holley fuel pump. We can run the turret in non-stab power mode, but unfortunately not in STAB mode. Switching on the alternator to supply AC power to the gyros (which run in non-stab mode), hand controllers, and amplifiers draws about 20 amps. Switching on the metadynes with no turret operation increases draw to about 50 amps. Traversing turret increases metadyne draw to about 100 amps. That’s why aux generator is required. Main engine generator is only good for a puny 40-50 amps. We manage without the aux engine because we have 4 large 12 volt batteries installed, which can handle the FVGCE load for the duration of one of our 20 minute shows.

@@bigold81electra A very interesting explanation. My experience of centurions was limited to two used as OP’s in 74/75. These were brought in to replace a pair to make part of a consignment sold to Austrian government. These worked very well. The replacements were dire. They were ex 9/12 who were next to us in lines and on Chieftain’s. They were appalled and told us they had them in Berlin and the guns never came out of the crutch! Needless to say everything broke - humiliatingly in public. The tels sets were in the back of the turret with the NATO connections to the Larkspur series sets 1 B and 1 C I think. There were no spares by this time relevant to Cents. You could have a replacement engine, gearbox or aux generator and that was about it. Anything else was met by the official communication “This equipment is obsolete. No spares held” My reply to that was cancelled by the ASM who said he sympathised with my point of view but I was not allowed to make such signals. The consequence was that I had to dismantle items like berilium sprung switches and make them function again. In a leisure environment one can use almost anything today but not then. This was because as an amateur reader of history I was aware of the RN experience when they first had electrics at sea. When the guns fired all the control panels and fuses failed! This was rectified by hold on circuits. The principle still applies in guns and tanks which is why some insignificant items are very expensive. Look at recent problems of Mr Hewes with Chieftain electronics. The bouncing and firing of a tank on rough terrain at speed means an existing relay from a Harrier jet was the most cost effective of current military equipment of the day. For current leisure use these could be repaired and stored for later use. I don’t think that would be difficult but time consuming and he is naturally working against the clock as he has bills to pay like everybody else. My recollection of the start up of Cents is the firing up of systems in sequence. This had to be as they were crammed into garages with fag packet clearance and few were allowed to start them as the Wrecker crew had to be called from HQ to haul it out in event of failure. Not popular! Dare not do it with 432 as too many junior drivers with inevitable consequences. We had one EMER which was shared between two batteries and was always down the road or left behind and one was expected to know how these worked because you were Chieftain trained. No excuses. It was a hard ground to learn on as you were always asking older members for information and the perception was you knew nothing, which was semi correct. The Tiffy ECE was surprised at the contents of the basic course and how much had been left out and once he new your weakness’s was helpful. If you were bright you flew but you usually crashed in flames at some point but by and large REME were very forgiving if you showed your thought process at arriving at minor disaster. Junior line offices were not so and would be rude and offensive because they could get away with it and you were the wrong cap badge. The Adjutant asked me one day why I did not apply for a commission I said I didn’t want to be like the junior officers. He smiled and said come and join us we need people with that attitude. I didn’t and put my money in! It was a long time ago and I look at this series with joy and amusement and remember knocking the hull and hanging my berry on the kill switch. I couldn’t climb the hull now and stairs are a bloody trial but I still have the joy of taking a young grandson to engineering and historical things and his mind is better than mine so I hope he becomes an engineer!

@@bigold81electra Well I think that gives you and others a great deal of fun. I always wanted to rebuild one of those splendid WWII lorries used by REME that were a travelling mechanical workshop. The sides folded down and there was a lathe behind the cab together with gas bottles and a host of tooling and I think an anvil and forge as well. It always struck me as an excellent means of a handyman earning a living in civvy street. The later models post war had a boxed rear on a 7.5 ton chassis with purely machining facility on it. The welding was electric and contained in back of Rover anything extra was back loaded to Workshop. Tels had their own wagon and ECE had a toolbox deficient of most tools and still listed for valve repair. Most useful thing was Avo 8 and 24 v soldering iron you could plug into vehicle. VM would give you the eye for borrowing tools to take off covers but were happy to oblige for kidney plate when wires fell off magneto! Reassembly done blind round a corner. Gunners gave you respect when you picked up the FVGCE and passed it overhead through the Commanders hatch. Apparently electronic types didn’t normally get dirty or lift heavy things! After a while they even volunteered to carry things for you. You knew then you had arrived!

One professional advise from the Military industry, with the cheap solder sleves, do pre-solder the wires before using those solder sleves, unless you are buying the original from Raychem/TE-Connectivity they tend to break over time due to to less solder in the sleve basically creating an cold solder.

Question for you Mr Hews. What octane level fuel do you run in the centurians? Also, given that the power plant in these tanks are a land version of the Merlins, could you run the fuel injected supercharged engine out of a spitfire for example or are they not compatible?
@glynluff2595
9 ай бұрын
I think you will find the compression ration for specific Meteor engines was under the 6:1 or thereabouts of the Merlin. The original Meteors were Merlin’s beyond hope of aerial use and were in use before the Centurion. No chance of putting a whole Spitfire engine in as nothing would fit and where would you get Avgas? The point of the superchargers on an aero engine is to give hi performance at altitude ground performance is relatively unimportant as fighting and bombing are done very high up. The addition of a supercharger would demand two thing the army did not wish, more complications and extended detailed servicing not possible in the field without removing the engine. Then there is the other matter - the transmission! As far as I can recall the EMER and a VM would know better than I, the clutch thrust was about 700lbs. Even with a manual reduction system these systems are heavy to operate. Standard public petrol known as pool petrol in wartime was about 68 to 74 octane. There was a request in the Commons post war when pool petrol was still on ration for an improvement to 78 octane. This request was denied by the Minister. Motor racing post war was done officially on such fuel which is why GP cars ran on dope for so long!
@bradleybatt1401

Daft question Joe. The noise that petrol tank engine makes. The sound that sounds very similar to a air-raid-siren. Is that the clutch/fan assembly sort of acting as a air-raid-siren? Do you know what I mean? I don't hear the likes of Spitfires and other large displacement petrol engines sounding like that so I assume its the fan as you rev the engine up the fan speed makes the air essentially really loud and winey?

Those solder sleeves are crap. Use proper crimp connectors, generally better. Fuel pressure?? What was original. Holley Blue pumps 20 psi and has to be regulated back to correct pressure. A Holley carrb is 7 psi. But an 1940s Rolls tank engine is ?? 3-4 psi. Extra pressure will richen the carb, too little will make it lean. The regulator needs a 5/16 return line to the tank. Dead heading a Holley pump kills them quickly. A ratchet strap is a good fuel tank mount. Though 2 may be required on that size tank. And rubber were in is strapped too. Unleaded has about a 3 month life. After that it is good to kill weeds!
