I told my pal "no he's not at the Caird Hall he's bloody well here n the park with Boz, Gary, Allan and all the roadies"!! As I turned around, you were already at the top of the hill about to leave with the band I wanted to shout to you wait, speak to me, see me, like me...but what would I say to the man who created my life's sound track, who saved me time and again and whom I have loved all my life...I suppose I could have just said hi...So near yet so far aye? My favorite song of all time, 25 years and running. I randomly met Moz the day before a show I was going to in 1997 and asked him if he could play it, and he responded "no, my band and I hate that song." HAHAHA I still find his blunt honesty more refreshing than if he had actually played it.

@@simonthompson27 in fairness he does dislike a lot of his songs and albums although I’m not sure why. I know he’s definitely not a fan of the debut Smiths album

@@Harry_84 I think, for morrissey, the (his) narrative can be equally important as the drudgery of reality. I like that. You’re not chained to the expectation of having to love what it is you have Done right ? And …He’s still tinged by what he grew up with . something like a ‘mark e smith’ attitude. Once upon a time …He loved smith. Even if mark smith said “ there’s only one smith in Manchester” lol.

Something about this video is timeless. Maybe it's because it's in black and white, maybe it's the architecture, maybe it's the clothes and hair - it looks like it could have been filmed any time from the 1950s until now. Only the cars would seem out of place. It's just perfect.

@113335196187087107128 I think you've got a lot of oversimplification and generalisation there. As an example, one of the areas of the UK with greatest show of Germanic DNA is North-East England. And one of those with greatest show of pre-Germanic DNA is south-west England, e.g. Cornwall.
@MatthewMcVeagh

Vxvx Vxvx Actually the DNA is mostly pre-Germanic, especially in the female lines. The language is certainly a Germanic one, altho heavily modified by Italic and Hellenic influences. Identity? That's a troubling and difficult concept. Genetics, language and many other factors may contribute to what people see as a country's 'identity', but any such opinion will always be subjective and selective. Even inasmuch as it has basis in truth people creating a national 'identity' in their minds select, prefer and overlook particular factors. You certainly are doing. :) As for the north-west: Cumbria was a Brittonic holdout for several centuries and was part of Scotland before it was part of England. Lancashire was one of the later parts of England to be captured by the Anglo-Saxons, and I have read an opinion that it shows higher than usual Brittonic ancestry, but I don't know what basis that has in fact. Liverpool of course has a considerable history of Welsh and then Irish immigration which adds to its 'Celticness'; Manchester less so but there is a little such influence. If I was to pick an English city to be the equivalent of Marseilles, which flaunts its sense of not really being French, it would be Liverpool: it is culturally a city apart. One thing in what you say which I don't get is "and not what the anti-crommelians believe which is that only the royalty is". Firstly who are 'anti-Cromwellians'? Do they all have the same beliefs? How do we know what they are? And what are you saying they believe about English royalty?
@MatthewMcVeagh
8 жыл бұрын
Vxvx Vxvx He was heavily anti-Cromwellian and anti-royalist in "Irish Blood, English Heart". He was also implicitly anti-royalist in "The Queen Is Dead" of course. I don't know why he expressed such strong feelings against Cromwell in IBEH; I suspect it's because (a) he doesn't identify with the morbidly serious and anti-fun attitudes of the Puritans, and (b) people may have expected him to like Cromwell and the Parliamentarians because he'd expressed such contempt for the royals in TQID, and he wanted to show that wasn't so - probably because of sympathy for the Irish. You have to remember a few things: 1) He is a contrarian; he will say things to the media or via his songs that he doesn't necessarily believe but to look good or defiant or different or to get a reaction. 2) A majority of English people don't like the Puritan tradition, it's highly alien to modern secular Britain and can be seen as an aberration in the history of England. Banning drinking and Christmas is not a good move for getting yourselves into the nation's good books. The significant point here is: he doesn't mention these issues in many other songs. But he does celebrate a lot of English life, especially tough working class life. Since he moved to London his cultural focus has been there rather than Manchester, and then it moved with him to Los Angeles and Rome etc. His comments about immigration show he hankers for a kind of England of his youth that he feels has been lost, not that he is alienated from 'England' per se. I've seen very little in his lyrics and public comments that show any identification with Ireland. Even in IBEH he links the Cromwellian inheritance with the royalist one in a way which doesn't make sense or correspond to reality. "And spit upon the name of Oliver Cromwell And denounce this royal line that still salute him And will salute him forever" The royals very much don't salute Cromwell. :) The only sense that can be made of it is vis-a-vis Ireland, that Cromwell regained Ireland for England and the subsequent English monarchy benefited from that. As another sign of his contrariness, when he was in Argentina he said to the audience "Everyone knows the Malvinas are Argentine"... on what basis? LOL, he's shown many signs of English pride over the years, he just likes being provocative.
