Just a reminder that no matter how many hours you studied this year, we all have our ups and downs, and everyone is living within their own confines of free time, motivation, and other internal/external factors. While this year was extremely productive for me, I’ve had other years in the past where I studied literally next to nothing, but it was all part of bringing me to where I am today. Nobody can live in a constant state of productivity ☺

Yeah, it’s good to always remember that everyone faces a different set of challenges and sometimes people you think you know well are facing unimaginably difficult circumstances with few if anyone even knowing about it. The point is comparing yourself to others is often not very helpful. But I do enjoy hearing about other people’s language learning experiences very much. Thank you for sharing.

@@nendoakuma7451 Exactly! I love sharing my experiences and watching others shares theirs, but as soon as people start playing the comparison game or start judging others, it becomes so unhelpful and even hurtful sometimes!

Woah, this was amazing!! First time seeing such a detailed learning progress, and I love it. Love the charts, the amount of info that you gathered... Also.. this video is super helpful because I tend to forget the amount of time that I spend learning new things and seeing all this data can keep me motivated through the months. Thanks for sharing it

This was my first year attempting to track things in such detail, and it was so fun that I'm going to try to continue! I'm sure I'll eventually become too lazy to keep it up, but for now I'm really enjoying it! And that's so true! It's so easy to forget all the little things you do over the course of a year. I'm so glad that now I have tangible evidence of the work I'm doing, so that when I do take some time off and give myself a break, I can still look back and see how far I've already come and not get down on myself for being unproductive.

@@SomedayKorean Woah, you did an amazing job, and not gonna lie, I love charts, and watching yours made me want to create my own hahaha. Totally true! That feeling of unproductiveness is the worst, but I'm happy that tracking helped you see that you did amazing this year!

Over 900 hours is crazy! You had around 400 hours more than me in total hours over the year 🤣 congratulations on achieving most of your goals and being very active in your languages! Love the charts, they make it quite easy to comprehend all of the information that you’ve gathered up. You must have worked hard to keep up with not only the hours spent in each language (like I also did) but also all of the other analytics that you tracked such as time spent on webtoons vs books or time spent on writing etc. I would have lost track if I had tried to monitor my language studies so meticulously😅

I was not expecting 900+ hours either 😅 Being a professor and having several months of vacation per year is very helpful, and even when I do work, being a professor tends towards a rather flexible schedule, since I can decide when I work on grading and planning and therefore have a very flexible weekly schedule as well (outside of set class times)-- great for creating time for language learning in general and especially for time-intensive challenges from time to time. Thankfully my tracking process isn't too difficult, since I mostly use apps/websites, so I can mostly just update my language learning notebook with the activities I did every few weeks by looking at my phone's app usage time and my browser history. Since you use one app/website for many languages (for ex, LingQ), it might be a bit complicated, but if you use the app Toggl it might help you track these things more specifically without too much work if you had the desire to (although in your vid you mentioned you weren't going to track anymore haha). Tanya Benavente has a good video on how she tracks her time with Toggl. I made a video about my tracking system here if you're interested: kzitem.info/news/bejne/unia2X53cKd4p6Q For the specific time spent on each activity, I went a bit crazy at the end of the year and made an entirely new spreadsheet to go back and analyze my time per activity. Typically, although my notebook has each activity and its time, my Google sheets was just total time spent each day per language up until that point. But I spent like 6 hours meticulously going through my study planners again and noting in my spreadsheet the specific time I spent on each day on each activity, which made my brain hurt honestly 😵💫 but it was cool to analyze afterwards.

@@SomedayKorean Yeah I was glad that I was able to track my progress for an entire year, but as you rightly pointed out, I have decided to stop tracking my progress just because I started it as something I wanted to do for just a year, and also personally it feels liberating not having to start a stopwatch every single time I study a language, even though sometimes I'm still catching myself going to track my progress as I'm so used to doing that haha LingQ is actually pretty good at tracking progress in their analytics - words read, time listened, time read, LingQs created, words marked off as known, etc for each individual language. A very good analytic system for those who like to look at the data I just got my LingQ year in review stats which were pretty fun to look at. A culmination of all of the work I put into LingQ this year is as follows: 326 days on LingQ 81 hours listened 10,574 LingQs created 7,340 words marked off as known 175,207 words read Studied in 25 different languages If I decide to track my progress in the future, I may do something like counting the days I'm active in the language. That's quite easy to track and I feel that it still shows a consistent dedication to the language

Right??? If I set that as a goal I think I would feel mentally overwhelmed after like 3 weeks, but somehow that happened organically. 😳 I think it was a combination of that 4.5 month daily Japanese challenge (which did end up being a bit mentally draining) plus my rediscovery of webtoons, which I found super enjoyable and actually made me want to read Korean almost every day.

Congratulations on a very productive year! I enjoy these detailed breakdowns. Something I'm curious about is how you feel, subjectively, about your improvement after all these hours (i think you only mentioned it for Japanese reading, but i may have missed it for the other areas). I know we sometimes don't notice our improvements even though we are improving, especially when we get to the higher levels like you are in Korean. With all that time spent in Korean this year, do you notice improvements in your ability? Are you able to consume more difficult media etc.? Congrats again.

Thanks! Yeah, that's a good question. My progress in Japanese felt more tangible because I started at a much lower level of understanding, so the growth in comprehension felt very large. With Korean, since I'm already at a fairly advanced level, it's a bit harder to feel progress, even though I'm sure I am slowly growing. I'm sure that after all of that reading and TOPIK prep and my Korean class, that my Korean is better than it was at the beginning of the year, but that progress doesn't feel as impressive to me since it feels more incremental. Also, since I didn't practice speaking much this year, my Korean skills don't feel like they've made any progress, even though I think my reading comprehension has surely improved through all of that reading. So I have huge satisfaction in some areas, and regrets/dissatisfaction in others -- a mixed bag. As for Mandarin, since I mostly just studied off and on a bit throughout the months, I think I maintained my recognition of characters without gaining a ton of new knowledge, which I'm fine with, although I have a desire to actively study a bit more Mandarin this year so I can have that feeling of progressing. I will say, when I encounter new words when reading, often when I play the pronunciation of the characters I'll realize I've heard that word a ton in dramas before, so even though I don't notice tangible progress in Mandarin either (just because I don't actively study it enough), those binge watching sessions of Mandarin shows are definitely slowly growing my recognition of spoken Mandarin words, which is a good feeling!

@@SomedayKorean great, thanks for answering. Guaranteed you made progress in Korean with all that time invested. Ironically it's a bit reassuring that you don't necessarily feel it, because it means we shouldn't get discouraged if we don't notice the improvements in ourself much, as long as we're putting in the effort. I find I have to remind myself of that sometimes. Cheers to more progress in 2024!

It's weirdly addictive, especially seeing different charts and graphs I can make from my data! It does take a little bit of time to update every week or so, but I think it's worth it in the end to have all this cool data to look back on! (This is my first year tracking my languages this way -- I've always been too lazy previously to actually write down what I do for long periods of time)

Wow, that's nearly 3 hours a day! I only started tracking my hours in July (I did pretty much nothing the first half of the year, anyway), and I ended up with 58 hours total - 48 in Spanish, and the rest divided by 3 languages, lol. I tried to give myself some monthly hours goals when I first started tracking, and it just didn't help or motivate me at all. Now I'm trying to do more specific tasks daily, and that's easier to check off my list, so I'm slowly becoming more consistent!
@SomedayKorean

Yeah, even though I enjoy my language tracking, it's just for looking back and tangibly seeing the progress I've made. The second I try to set a time-based goal, I INSTANTLY lose motivation lol. I can do a week-long time challenge sometimes, but even those are a struggle to get through honestly. I've had to learn what works for me. For example, if I had set the goal to study 75% of the days of the year, there is no way in hell I would have achieved that goal 🤣 Somehow my motivation spurts were just more common than my breaks this year, probably due to me thinking of ideas of things to film. Instead, like you said, I've found that giving myself specific tasks to work on is much more motivating, so I'll do a week of focusing on breaking down news broadcasts, or trying to read every day for a few weeks. I'm usually much more successful focusing on those specific tasks rather than time-based goals.

and when you phrase it as almost 3 hours per day... my brain almost refuses to accept that!! That's madness! Those scattered days of binge watching dramas definitely helped skew that upwards a bit, I think 😂
