Jordan Trail day 25
Stage: Wadi Malaga - Ruins of the village of Quatla
Distance: 26km
Total distance: 623km
I woke up before sunrise. Immediately after that, I heard the Lady of the House start her morning duties. After a few minutes, the whole tent was filled with smoke from the fire where the hostess was boiling water for tea. Pretending to be asleep, I watched the rest of the household wake up. The host went to the animals and the children sat by their mother waiting for her to prepare breakfast.
When I got up, I was immediately given tea, but this time with milk. I sat on the mattress drinking a delicious brew and continued to watch the everyday life of these people. As soon as she had prepared breakfast, the woman started making bread. She made dough in a small bowl and put a piece of a bent sheet on which she baked round, flat breads on the fire.
I wondered about many things as I watched this family. I watched children sitting on the ground barefoot and eating a meal with their fingers. Their life looks difficult, but looking at them you get the impression that everything is so simple. They have a place to live, what to eat, they have each other and a seemingly peaceful life. How is it actually? I probably won't find out but I want to believe that they are really happy and I wish them that with all my heart.
Before 8 o'clock I went on the trail. A narrow but clearly visible path led me. After about a kilometer there were large mounds of stones that showed the way. It was very pleasant, albeit uphill all the time. Behind me a beautiful view of a flat area with single small mountains and in front of me huge rocky mountains through which I was about to cross.
When I started to climb the path became very steep, after a while the trail entered the dry river bed and continued uphill. Despite this, I was doing very well. I quickly reached the highest point and as it happens in the mountains, if you went up, now you have to go down. So I went down to a beautiful gorge with a river flowing at the bottom. It was so wide that it was impossible to walk with dry feet. There I met the only people on the trail today. Three shepherds were resting with their flock and my presence surprised them greatly. I greeted them warmly and moved on. I entered the bed of another dried up river and I was so comfortable wandering along its bottom that I didn't notice the descent. It cost me 2 extra kilometers. Then the trail went crazy. I had to climb about 500m up and traverse a huge slope. Not only was there no path, but also dried trees with thorns that had to be squeezed through. Again I walked very slowly and carefully. On my right side there was quite a steep slope and you had to be careful on the stones not to fall down. I did not film this episode because even the tripod could not be unfolded. In the end, I managed to enter a rather pleasant path and reach the next ruins on the trail. Here I decided to set up camp because it was close to sunset.
I don't have water anymore, still no range but I'm safe.
Jordan Trail day 26
Stage: Quatla village ruins - Wadi Musa
Distance: 34km
Total distance: 657km
I woke up shortly after 6am. I slept like the dead for over 11 hours and felt refreshed. I quickly packed up my stuff and hit the trail. I wanted to reach Little Petra at a decent hour so that I could go further through Petra itself and finish the day in Wadi Musa.
The backpack was light today because I ran out of water. I used the last drops to wash my face. I was calm, I knew that the road would solve the water problem. The first 4 kilometers were quite difficult because I was walking on a narrow path uphill. On the way, I picked up a GSM signal for the first time since yesterday morning. I took a short break to complete the report from yesterday and let you know that I'm fine.
After another kilometer I found the first Bedouin tent. The natives called me over and gave me tea. Also got 2 bottles of water. I was very grateful to them. Now I was able to move on easily. The next kilometers are a beautiful journey along a good road. I was able to speed up and enjoy the views. The landscape changed and delighted with its beauty. I got to Little Petra after 12 noon and after the "check-in" at the checkout I entered the trail to Petra.
